The moment I read your secret, I knew you were going to get blasted for what you believe. I'm not saying I agree because I think you've kind of missed the point that they are just characters and there is no Heaven or Hell waiting for them in the afterlife.

I do find it charming that you are so unobtrusive about what you believe and weren't in the least offensive. I'm sorry for the shitstorm you're going to get hit with because the sentiment was very sweet and compassionate, even if it seems a bit misplaced and misguided. Keep on!

Agreed.

Also agreed. I find it kinda funny, but definitely not offensive, and I feel badly for your sake just reading the other comments.

The sentiment itself is cute, and I can respect people feeling that in REAL LIFE as long as they keep it to themselves (vs telling people their fate is in hell), but it's just so damn funny.

Agreed with you and Kinneas, but seriously, if this doesn't come from a 12 year old person, I'm going to be really disappointed.

I agree that it's well intentioned, but what I 'disrespect' is when someone makes someone who could not possibly *be* Christian into a Christian. Fantasy and Sci Fi, or wrong time period, or wrong nation.

sort of like making het characters gay, hm?

it's her fanfic, she's entitled to write it as she sees fit. it's not any different than what many other writers do to the characters in fanfiction.

besides, with all due respect, who cares what you respect or disrespect? just don't read it.

No, that's not the same thing at all. Human sexuality is fluid enough to believably allow a surprising amount of wiggle room in writing, and it's also something that's physical and innate to people.

If you're writing in a fandom like, say, Fullmetal Alchemist, it is much much more plausible and possible to write Roy Mustang as gay than as a Christian.

... Just thought I'd throw that one out there :D

(Not disagreeing with your stance, just the example you used to demonstrate it.)

I always wondered about Christianity in FMA. Random, I know, seeing as most of the religions weren't, but I saw some parallels.

But don't you know? Since Christianity IS the great truth behind the universe, it technically exists EVERYWHERE! God's word is in your heart, it has been from the moment of your birth! THAT'S why you deserve to go to Hell if you're not Christian – denying Christ can only be an active, conscious, intentional act of rebellion. You may think otherwise, but that's only because you've deluded yourself so.

Oh, and also, homosexuality only exists in our universe because it's a cultural construct and a choice. Therefor, writing gay characters in a universe where homosexuality has not been shown to exist is just as illogical as writing Christian characters in a universe where Christianity has not been show to exist.

(Did I get all that right? I think that's the basic argument, but I need the OP's confirmation. Feel free to go poking for straw, OP.)

Re: 16

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
yep, I just won't read it.

Well, heterosexuality and homosexuality exist no matter what the canon. Christianity can't exist in a fantasy world where there is no religion, or where there was no Jesus.

Though, I suppose this girl could be only working with modern day, Western Society, fandoms.

Idiots can be sweet but they're still idiots.

[identity profile] queenie-z.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
And believing in Heaven and Hell is idiocy how?

(Anonymous) 2008-01-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

(Anonymous) 2008-01-01 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's certainly a good scare tactic to get people to join your religion!

[identity profile] queenie-z.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Christianity is about forgiveness and love despite people's imperfection. All too often people - including "Christians" - turn it into a "TURN OR BURN!!!!" thing, and that just isn't right. I'm sorry if you've been given such a wrong impression of our faith.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-01 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much what "believing in heaven and hell" entails, you know. Hell is a place you go if you don't accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior. And if you accept that, you're Christian. If you don't, you're not. Simple.

Whatever else Christianity might be about (and I know what else it's about, I'm not looking for a lecture), if you do believe in hell in the biblical sense, you must necessarily also believe that some people? Go there. Else, what's the point in believing in it? At least the OP of the secret admitted to that.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-01 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Because religion is a club, and whoever has the most members gets a gold star!

Re: 16

[identity profile] bonnche.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I don't really see what's wrong with this secret; if pretending his/her favorite characters are Christian makes the poster feel better then good for them, right? :/

Re: 16

Re: 16

[identity profile] bad-luck-bird.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Oddly enough, living in the Bible Belt has made me much more tolerant and respectful of other views. When you get the choice of Christian Screaming At You About How Damned You Are While You Walk To School or Christian Politely Stating Their Beliefs... you learn to really prefer one over the other and treat them with kindness rather than blanketed hatred and anger - least your actions turn them into the raving street corner loony. And besides - you wouldn't want to be the angry and intolerant jerk that you peg them for, right? A polite smile and simply saying, "No thank you. I'd rather not discuss my religion. It's quite personal." is more than enough to get people to smile back and leave you be.

Though I still like the Mormons the best around here. They're just so cute and they always give me free books. (Granted it's always the same book... but still!)

But I digress... you didn't hurt anyone with your secret and it really wasn't that offensive. Agreed in that I think you're going about it the wrong way and it's a little misplaced but... it's still sweet.

16 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-01-03 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for being so nice about it at least. :) And I will keep in mind the advice about not writing characters who are canonically something else Christian, although I don't do that often anyway. It's more like, if a character has no established canon religion (not in the sense that they've out-and-out said they're an atheist, but in the sense that their religios beliefs aren't really touched on at all), then I'll make them Christian in my fics. If they have an established religion or Christianity doesn't exist in their world I try to respect that, either by not writing them as Christians or by not writing fic for that canon at all.

I do get what some people are saying about it being preachy and I'm sorry...I don't really want to seem like that. But I will think about that next time I write fics.

Thank you to you and everyone else who has been kind to me, even if the ones who were critical in a nice way.
