Is it just me or have we had a lot of "look at my literary prowess!" Secrets lately?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
SA in this secret it's not so much the secret part that's bothersome, it's that it can't just be "this inspires me when I hadn't been" it's got to be "I read Tolkien when I was a kid! I argue with my teachers and quote classics!"

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, that is kinda dumb. On the other hand, I often feel bad about caring about things like whether or not people say gauche things like that. I mean really who cares? We get 70 or 80 years on this rock and I'm supposed to spend my time worrying whether some person on the Internet is expressing their reading habits in sufficiently reasonable ways? But I do care. Can't stop myself from judging.

Gonna quote what I said to the other anon -
That's the secret here - this character is a conceived douchebag who's every second line is a quote from some ~quality~ literature and he actually says that ebooks are trash and can't compare to ~real~ books, and my reaction is, hey, remember when you were like that? That was fun, let's do it again.

Wow, sour grapes.

It was the difference between all their freakishly early reading and then reading no books at all after discovering fanfic that was the whole point of this secret.

If the secret went "I read no books at all as a kid, then fanfic made me read so many words as a teen!" it would be an entirely different message.

If you're an early reader, of course you want to argue about it annoyingly with everyone. It comes with the territory of being precocious. Looking back, you see you were a brat when you were too young to control it.

To the OP: don't worry, your love for books does come back. It may take years, but as long as you're enjoying the fanfic in the meantime, it's all good. In my case, I nearly stopped reading books for about a decade, and I was also an early and prolific reader. Now I'm back to mostly reading books, but still enjoy the fanfic, so it's a double bonus.

Image: line art of an anime/manga style character, I can’t quite tell but based on context I think he’s reading a book?

Text: As a kid, I read a ton of books. Finished the Tolkien collection before I was a teenager, got in to arguments about Art of War and quote Sophie’s choice. You booknerds know the drill.

Then the internet came along and I just kinda stopped. Started roleplaying. Read tons of fanfic instead. Travelled a lot. Ten years.

Until this guy. Thank you, oh fictional villain, for making me borrow dADoES and re-read the bible. I’m not quitting on you again.

Shogo Makishima, the villain from Psycho-Pass season 1, is the character.

He's a pretentious fuckwad and I wanna bang him.

As the OP, I agree...

As someone who loves books and literature, even to me you sound a bit pretentious.

Yeah, that's the secret here - this character is a conceived douchebag who's every second line is a quote from some ~quality~ literature and he actually says that ebooks are trash and can't compare to ~real~ books, and my reaction is, hey, remember when you were like that? I don't get the whole e-book vs. paper book thing.

I mean, I understand having a personal preference for one over the other, just like having a preference for paperback or hardcover. But the whole "e-books are trash" just baffles me. Because a book isn't about paper or pixels, it's about words, and however people choose to get the words in front of their eyes (or into their ears), it's the words that matter.

(Of course, people were doing the same kind of lamenting/doomsaying when Pocket Books started selling cheap paperbacks.)

Just seriously excellent taste here anon.

Loving all the Psycho Pass secrets, and one of my favourite PKD works (outside The Man in the High Castle obviously).

OP

More Psycho Pass secrets incoming! I got fired and am now reading books, watching anime and reading manga, and then I make a ton of secrets every time I finish something.

I went on to Google PKD because I couldn't bother to scroll up to see what books I had mentioned, but all I got was "Polycystic kidney disease" which I now will assume is what you meant.

(no don't worry it struck me later, I had an "aha" moment)

You don't happen to have any recs on similar stuff? ლ(╹◡╹ლ)
