I just wish they'd actually, you know, focused on Bilbo who is THE HOBBIT

Like, I enjoy flawed characters but not when it's BULLSHIT about "dragon sickness" and the story still treats him like a "noble hero" even though he does FUCK ALL to help the people he screwed over

No, but it's explicitly stated to be an inheritable mental illness that causes paranoia, irrationality, obsession, and delusions. It doesn't absolve him of the consequences of his actions while under the influence of it, but mental illness shouldn't just be dismissed as "bullshit" just because the actions of the person suffering from it sucked.

Mental Illness isn't a magic backpeddling tool when he promised he'd share in the riches for the town, which deserves so much more considering he UNLEASHED A DRAGON ON THEM.

I get that the Laketown people got screwed over but they also fucked up by showing up with the elven army on Thorin's doorstep. Like wtf were the elves doing there in the first place? They couldn't send an emissary if they wanted those fucking jewels?

I got the feeling that the Laketown people were going to get screwed over either way. It's not like Thorin would have handed over any gold if they're shown up without the elves - and I understand why you might feel the need for backup. You can question what Thranduil's motives were, but the Laketown people have nothing left. If elves show up offering assistance - well, that's more than the dwarves did.

I'd have more sympathy if they'd ever given the dwarves a chance. Maybe Thorin was "paranoid" but he thought an army was going to show up to kill his people and take their gold and that's exactly what happened and that's the situation Bard tried to bargain in. I wouldn't have forked it either. Considering Thorin eventually shook off the dragon sickness and came to his senses, I feel like he probably could have been reasoned with and Laketown would have gotten their due. It's hard to say for certain "well he wouldn't have" considering all of the fears that were supposed to just be his "paranoid delusions" as a result of the sickness actually came true in the film.

I agree with you, and I believe Thranduil just happened to make it worse because he didn't seem like the type who thought the dwarves could be reasoned with peacefully. Maybe he had good reason after what happened with Thror, but the way I see it, he immediately took a "Do it my way or you're dead!" attitude to Thorin. Bard and the other Laketown survivors got caught more or less in the middle of that mess.

The Elves turned up with a whole army because Thranduil is genuinely a giant bag of dicks who thinks the only way he'd get the gemstones he wants out of Thorin is by threatening him. Basically, Thranduil knew Thorin would turn an emissary away, so he went whole hog right from the start.
