Wouldn't have been nearly as much like the Hobbit if they'd done that, though..

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I just wish they'd actually, you know, focused on Bilbo who is THE HOBBIT

instead of Thorin

Thorin was an asshole and deserved to suffer WAY worse than he did, the fucking dick.

Why did Thorin deserve more suffering?

Except Bilbo is boring as hell.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I would have preferred if they had developed those characters instead. With 3 movies, they could have spent some time on each of them, give us some idea who they are, instead of giving us characters like freaking Alfrid.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I'd forgotten about Alfrid. What a pointless character and waste of time. I think it's one of Jackson's weaknesses, though... failing to develop some characters or plots in his adaptations while spending too much time on the changes or additions he made. :(

I agree with you. More dwarves, less Alfrid (and frankly, less Legolas and Tauriel as well).

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It makes me sad that Dori and Bombur are X'd out. I completely understand why but they're important in the book. The movies did do a good job of making more of the Dwarves memorable but 13 characters is a lot if you don't know the book. I would be sad from a purist POV to lose some of the Dwarves but I can't say there isn't a valid sentiment here.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I would have gotten rid of the two pretty ones because they're so boring. At least Bifur and Bombur were fun to watch.

I agree about it being a lot of characters and a very cluttered movie (made more so by stupid elves), but removing any of the dwarves would have drawn the ire of the Tolkien purists (who were already up in arms about the stupid elves).
nanslice: (Default)

[personal profile] nanslice 2015-01-10 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the stupid elves didn't really help much with the ridic cast size (although I mean, I did like seeing Legolas, ngl).

Not gonna lie, started humming the Jaws theme when Galadriel was circling the table during the White Council scene.

(Okay, still haven't seen BOFA. Tomorrow, hopefully.)

But I strongly disagree with this. The dwarves were one of my favorite part of the films, despite the fact that they didn't really have many (or some of them, any) lines. The looks created for them were so unique and vibrant, and they were fun to watch even when they weren't really given much to do. IMO they still managed to have much more personality than the dwarves in the book (which, granted, wouldn't be hard) and I appreciate that.

If anything there should've been less action, less elves, and less filler. (More Bilbo and more focus on other dwarves.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I was sad they did nothing with Bombur because he's so great in the book. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I also remember liking Bombur. And I read that book 11 years ago.

The problem wasn't really with the number of characters, but with the distribution of focus. The dwarves were pretty bland aside from a couple of exceptions in the book. I think it was a bad decision to start fleshing all of them out in the first movie only to ignore pretty much all of them again in the last two when more characters got added. If they'd just left them bland it wouldn't have made too much difference, but starting to build them up only to drop them later just makes it obvious that the films didn't have the control they should have done.

It's kind of their biggest fault overall, I think. They're bloody uneven across the board, in terms of pacing, character focus, characterisation, tone, storylines ... They just feel hasty.

And now I sound like an Ent.

On a slightly different note, you've pretty much exed out all of my favourite dwarves at a stroke :( Mostly for the fanon more than canon, admittedly, but I'm definitely more fond of the two working-class family groups than the damn bloody Durins.

You would think with three movies for one book they would have been able to flesh out the dwarves out.

I know it would have been almost an all male cast but I wish they would have never put in Tauriel and had focused on all the dwarves instead.

Image: promo art of the Company of Thorin, with a red X on the faces of seven of the Dwarves.

Text: I kind of wish the movies had cut out half of the dwarf cast. They’re dead wood. None of them have any important lines or scenes that couldn’t have been handled by another dwarf. It would make them so much easier to tell them apart and the film would be far less cluttered.

I like all the dwarves but I will agree it was pretty cluttered with characters, but tbh they could have removed some of the elves and certainly gotten rid of Alfrid(he was in the movie waaaay too much, like it was fine to have the bit on the shore, but after that? No man, get back to the dwarves idc about this fucker) in order to develop the other dwarves some more.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
You could literally say the exact same thing about the book. People complain about the dwarves a lot, but they are actually way more fleshed out in the movies than they were in the book. I mean, fuck, at least the majority of them had at least one line across the trilogy. Can't say the same for the book in which many of them never spoke at all. (You can't remove Ori or Gloin btw, as both have connections to FOTR)

I would X out different dwarves, but yeah they might as well X out dwarves since the X'd out most of the plot of The Hobbit to add in their own plot plus endless boring battle scenes. (Although granted, if I go to a movie called Battle of the Five Armies, I should expect a lot of battle scenes.)

I agree that most of the dwarves were under-used, something which is a fault shared with the book. I also agree with the comments that say there was too much focus on the Elves and the stupidity that is Alfrid.

I think it would have made better sense if more of the Company went up to Raven Hill instead of just Thorin, Fíli and Kíli, instead of sending Legolas and Tauriel up there for more stupid elfy stunts. It would have used the Company better if they had more battle scenes of just them.

Oh, and I also didn't need the useless love triangle either.

Sadly I agree - In the book you're not really supposed to tell most of them apart, which doesn't go very well with the epicness the movie was trying to achieve.
