Urgh -- I should have deleted this secret.

I made it when I was pissed off because some asshole was telling me I'm a misogynist because I won't "admit" that Character B is in love with Character A.

Because when he treats like shit/ignores her while pouring all of his emotion into Character C, that's totally TRUE LOVE!

But…yeah. Captain Obvious secret is Obvious. Just felt like ranting when I made it because I was sick of being told that the author's inability to make their ideas convincing (to me) means I'm sexist.

No, you shouldn't have deleted this. Just because it's been said before doesn't mean you can't say it. Your thoughts and reasons still matter. So what if it's obvious to some people? Not everyone has had this discussion.

Don't let sarcastic jerks get in your way. Death of the Author is a huge, varied debate.

Okay, I feel like a jerk. Obviously, I've been spending far too much time around egomaniacs who always act like their ideas are ~the most original thing eva~ to stop and remember that there are lots of different reason someone would want to say something like this. I apologize for the knee-jerk sarcasm.

OP

It's okay. :)

It was a wall of text rant anyway in truth.

I'm sorry someone was an asshole to you in real life, and also that you ended up feeling like you needed to apologize for your secret. I can think of a couple of different stories/films/series where your secret applies, and as a casual FS reader I haven't seen this idea expressed exactly this way in a secret before. So thanks-- this really clarifies the objections I've felt or read about certain canon romances where fans really felt some other pairing made more sense.

No need to apologize! If every secret was completely new and never heard of, that's kind of a bad bar to go by. Sure, your thoughts might not be new to a lot, but this is YOU expressing it. Chances are that someone else hasn't heard it anyway.

Just gotta learn to take the comments as they come imo. I could very well stink up a thread to tell folk their secrets and comments are droll, but that's pointless and boring. Because even those add something someone might not have thought of.

Doesnt matter if we've heard it before and I actually thought the part about people expecting somewhat more respect towards canon pairings wasn't terribly redundant. I feel like even though the fandom environment is often dominated by love of non-canon pairings, you still run into people who want to believe that shipping what's canon is winning in some way. In one of my fandoms we used to deal with this particularly annoying individual who was a multi-shipper (supposedly) but couldn't tolerate the most mild disapproval of her precious canon pairing even in spaces set aside for fans of other ships and was always trying to call people out for "disrespectfully" sidestepping any mention of the relationship in fics that were about other ships. And you just can't avoid those people cause they basically want diversity of shipping, but with a damn seniority system.

Well, just to play devil's advocate: just because B treats A like crap and treats C far better, doesn't mean he isn't in love with A, or that he's actually in love with C. People treating people they're in love with more poorly than they treat their friends happens a lot, largely because:

a) society has this weird conflation where having romantic feelings for each other is supposed to automatically equal being suitable partners in a stable monogamous relationship, which is bullshit, love and attraction are not sufficient to the success of a romantic relationship, and

b) society enforces this weird bullshit where the object of your romantic desire is supposed to somehow automatically be the most important person in your life and your feelings towards everyone else is supposed to pale in comparison, even if your feelings and relationships don't conveniently line up that way.

So basically, well, actually yes, B can totally be in love with A, and not in love with C even in that context. Of course, that means A/B is not a terribly happy or shippable couple, but if you're talking descriptively - what is is actually occurring, rather than what ought to happen/what is good - it's totally plausible. (Though I somehow doubt that's what the author of whatever fandom you're talking about was intending, lol.)
