For me, it has more to do with respecting the source material. I may not agree with the pairings, but the author/artist created it and shared it - if I'm into it enough to even care about any of the characters, then I feel like I should at least be respectful of where it all came from.

...that's not really what you were talking about, is it? :-/

I will always respect that that may be what the author ~intended~. But I don't feel I should have to accept or respect anything within the work itself just because the author declares it to be so. I mean, even beyond shipping, if that's the case then you can't really criticize literature/movies/TV.

If an author says they didn't intend to write, say, a caricature of a particular ethnic group, I'm not going to agree and say "Amen" just because the author clarified their intentions.

nayrt

I thought the ayrt meant "I respect that this is canon" and prefers to flesh out or develop the canon pairing to make it work rather than handwave it and go "I'm going to pretend this didn't happen, and he got with character B instead."

Not that doing the latter thing is bad, just it's a different way of approaching the canon.

See, to me, I'll say "I respect that this is what the author intended" but because Character B canonically treats Character A so poorly, I don't believe that their love is "canon" and thus I reject it. I feel that's a fair enough statement to make -- I'm not saying everyone else has to look at it the way I do. Just that I look at the evidence (the work itself) and form my own conclusions based off my own life experience and subjective perception.

I'm not trying to hand wave and say things didn't happen. For example, if Character B and Character A kiss, I'm not going to act as though that didn't happen. But if Character B is scared to death and freaks out when Character C's life is in danger while being unfazed when the same thing happens to Character A in similar circumstances…well…then I won't buy it that B is in love with A.

Because when I love people, I can't sit back and chill while they risk their lives. So the love that reads "true" (to me) is Character B's love for C. Not A.
