Twilight

That's the example I always bring up and it's a cheap one but honestly? I think it cuts all the points you're making to shreds. It's intended as a TRUE LOVE story, but with the way they (especially Edward) behave? It isn't.

You can tell me a million times that they love each other.
You can show them kissing.
You can have declarations of love.
You can have the author saying it over and over in interviews.

But given how Edward treats Bella I do not believe it in the slightest. And I don't think I should be forced to "accept" that Edward (or Character B) is in love with Bella (or Character A) when every shred of evidence in the work itself contradicts this claim.

That's all I'm saying.

This. There's a reason for the old adage of "Show, don't tell" where writing is concerned. An author can tell us all they want that a pairing is canon, but if they don't actually show how it developed/show us how and why the characters work together as a couple/show us anything to make us believe "Yes, these two characters are in love with each other," then why should we believe it? Me telling you the sky is green doesn't make it so.

If you want people to ship a particular pairing, show it in your writing. Make us believe it, because telling is just plain lazy writing.

Oh, I believe Edward and Bella. I'm not crazy about it (I actually do prefer Jacob with Bella--I think she's much more interesting around him) but I believe it. I don't believe that Edward and Bella are healthy, but I believe they love each other obsessively. (Come on. ALL their actions say they're obsessed with each other. Flying to Italy? Trying to kill yourself? Fucked up but yes, I buy it as some kind of folie a deux love.)

And yes it is canon, regardless of how we might wish otherwise. I would never, ever say "every shred of evidence contradicts this claim." That sounds like the words of a disappointed shipper.

That is NOT love. That is obsession and attraction, but it is NOT love. Love means putting the other person before yourself. Love means treating them with respect and listening to them.

NEVER say that this is love -- this is the type of logic that abused people use to justify staying with their abusers. NO. Someone who loves you will NOT treat you the way Edward treats Bella.

If Edward goes and gets therapy and goes back to Bella and treats her right -- then, yes, that's love. But that NEVER happens in the book.

And no matter what Meyer says, nothing changes the fact that what she wrote is NOT demonstrative of two people in love.
