(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:35 am (UTC)(link)Text: I don’t understand why it seems as though fans are expected to respect canon parings. So the author wrote a relationship intending to believe that two characters are in love? And…so what? Why exactly does that mean I have to respect it? Alternate interpretations even of major THEMES of works has always occurred.
Example: Ray Bradbury (author for Fahrenheit 451) has said that his book was NOT primarily about censorship but about how worthless television was destroying literature. Despite what he intended, though, the prominence of book destruction in his story means that a lot of readers, academics, and literary critics focused on censorship as the central theme of the novel.
So if one writes a “romance” between Character A and Character B but then devotes much more time to developing the bond between Character B and Character C and shows them expressing greater emotion towards one another than B ever did to A, of course some people are going to come away caring more about B/C than B/A. And I don’t think that the fact that the author wanted a B/A romance grants it some magical right to more respect than B/C.
