Idk if it's people asking you to respect canon, or if people get sick of the shipper wars started by the fans who ship the pair that is not canon - and keep telling the canon fans that they are doing shipping wrong because your ship is the real thing while theirs is a farce.
Because to be honest? It seems to me that in some fandoms, especially where the popular not canon ship is m/m slash, people are expected to respect the not canon ships more and not dispute them and the bias of their fans because their ship will never be canon - but on the flip side fans of the not canon ships have the right to express their frustration over their ship not being canon by bashing the canon ship and torment their fans with unnecessary shipper wars where there shouldn't be any.
Shippers have a bad reputation among the general fans for a reason.

Except…I never told canon fans that what they are shipping is a farce and mine is the real thing. I said, from my perspective, when I look at the events in the work, Character B is treating Character A poorly and shows much more emotion/passion towards Character C. If they see it differently, I'm not going to say "You're wrong!" It's fine with me that people disagree with my interpretation. I mean, the author clearly sees it differently than me so obviously I recognize that my opinion is not everyone's opinion.

It's when people get insulting that I take an issue with it. I do not HAVE to "admit" that Character B is in love with Character A. Because from where I'm standing, his behavior is not indicative of love. If it is to you, then great! I'm not saying you're wrong. More power to you if you enjoy it.

But if you come up and yell at me and call me names or say I'm a bigot for writing down my opinion of the work then we're going to have a problem. Because I don't accept that. My opinion is just as legitimate as yours. And while I respect your right to an opinion, I don't give it more respect or legitimacy than my own.

No one needs my approval to interpret a work how they see fit. And, similarly, I don't need anyone else's approval and I don't accept that I must see things a certain way.

For example: If you hate my ship and think it would NEVER, EVER work that is 100% okay with me. My enjoyment of it is not dependent on your approval. If you want to write up the issues you had with the presentation of the friendship/rivalry/overall relationship of my ship within the work -- go right ahead. You have an opinion and a right to express it.

If there is an exchange of "I love yous" within canon, then I'm afraid that yes, you do. Canonical fact, however badly you think it's handled, however much you disagree with it, is not open to interpretation. It simply is. How they depict their character' relationships is not an "opinion" of the author, it's fact within that canon and universe, however badly you think it's presented. Unless it's a plot device/point, then writers do not generally write their characters saying something they don't feel in that scenario. If the character says it, then it becomes canon. That's not an opinion, however much you might not like it. You not liking it, that's an opinion, and as you say you have a right to it.

Now, you're totally free to criticize the writer's decision and the execution of the relationship within the text. You're free to write your version of events, and you're free to find a way to explain why Character B might have said that when they didn't mean it etc. and free to write as much fanwork as you like to redress the percieved imbalance.

But when you're claiming your interpretation trumps the canonical facts put forth in the text by the creator, then yes, you're showing disrespect. And a little arrogance. You do not know better than the author. You just don't agree with them, and there's a difference.

No, I really don't. You know why? Because my mom says that to my dad basically every other day. But it's not true. She's said so to me when we're alone. My grandfather said that to me as well but I don't believe it. Because I've never met him. I talked to him basically five times in my life over the phone and at the same time, he called me fat and berated me for not losing weight. HE might think he loves me or he might want me to believe that he loves me, but I don't think he does.

And you know that this is also what abusers do, right? They say they love you but then treat you like crap.

So Character B might say "I love you" to Character A, but that doesn't mean crap to me. Character B could easily be lying. Character B might not have experienced true romantic love yet and thus believe he's in love when he's not. Character B could be saying it to placate Character A. Or a variety of other reasons. So it very much IS open to interpretation.

That Character B SAID "I love you" in canon is a fact. That Character B is being completely honest with Character A (or with himself) is open to interpretation however.

I'm not claiming that my interpretation trumps anything. Me not believing it does not prohibit YOU from believing it. I'm not showing disrespect to say that I find Character B's behavior to be inconsistent with that of a person in love and thus I do not believe Character B is being truthful when he says those words. Either that, or he doesn't truly understand what those words mean.

If you believe it, then please feel free to. But I am not confined by your views. I am not imposing my views on anyone -- I'm not saying you are wrong or berating you to change your ways. It is not arrogance or disrespectful to simply state my perspective of events.
