I do this too. But only because I have a really short attention span, lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you me? I'm the same. My mind drifts so I keep switching tabs and read three stories at once that way.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I don't know why but I'll read large chunks of books in one sitting but the instant I start reading on my computer, my mind wanders.

That's how I browse the Internet at all times

I actually have the same issue! Anything well-written and evoking strong emotions just gets to be too much for me once in a while, and I have to tab out/put the book down/pause the video. It's even -- or especially -- the case when they're positive emotions. (Although negative emotions, like embarrassment or 'cringe comedy' are very likely to get me to put it down and never come back to it -- I feel those with awkward intensity, too.)

I don't know why this is the case, but it's true.

are you me? because this is me all over it.

Same way here anon! Sometimes a story gets me too emotional and I have to take a walk or something

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I always "have to get a drink" during Mufasa's death scene in Lion King for this exact reason. Can't do it. No way.

I only get like this with very intense works. I can count on one hand the number of works that made me do that... Berserk is the first one that comes to mind, but everyone feels that way about the Eclipse, I think...

Me too. Or I only read one chapter, bookmark, and come back to it at a later date.

Text: I can’t read a well written long fic in one go.

I keep a few tabs with fics open so I can switch between fics when one of them makes me too emotional.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
ME TOO!

I felt like such an idiot like I was the only one. I get too worked up as I'm reading a big scene and have to switch to something less exciting.

I have to put RL books down as I'm reading them, exactly the same, when I get too emotional.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP! This goes for anything.. novels, books, shows, anime. I guess it depends "what kind" of emotional though.

Like I'm more likely to switch what I'm reading/watching if I get secondhand embarrassment.. like if a character does or says something that I consider really stupid (like a mistimed love confession.. making a dumb misunderstanding.. whatever else) and I'm scared at how the other character/s will react.. I go "NO NO NO NO NO" and stop reading/watching. And then I try to continue a little at a time, with my hands over my eyes.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh. But usually I switch and read something else till I get my bearings.

When I'm following a WIP as it's being updated, I often find myself flipping to another tab for a few minutes several times while reading a chapter just to make it last a little longer because I know once I get to thge end, I'll have to wait again for another chapter. If I have a book in my hand, I can read a big chunk in one gulp without pause and would sit and read the whole thing at once if I had the time.

I pretty much always open each fic I want to read in a new tab but I usually finish one before starting another, I do sometimes flit between them though if one is hitting a particular emotional spot.

It depends on the fic for me. Some long fic, if they are really interesting, I can read straight on 'til morning. Some long fic is well-written but may not keep my interest so I will flip to other fic.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-01-10 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too.
Or when the fic hits all my sweet spots and I think that the author is my better and more talented brain twin. The perfection becomes too much.
The other tabs can be blogs or fs though, not necessarily other fics.

On occasion I'll spend almost an entire day reading the same fic so this isn't an issue for me, but I can understand the desire to multi-task like this, lol. (I think I would just get confused, though. I've tried keeping up with five or six long fics at once, but once they hit a certain point I eventually start confusing them and they all kind of run together and I have to start over.)

I do this too, but more often because some really good fics I like remind me of other ones and I have to stop and pull up the other one to compare and contrast (which usually makes me enjoy both of them even more ;)) I usually get riveted by something that makes me really emotional and can't put it down/switch away from the tab.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-01-11 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
riveted is a nice word.

I do that too! Both with emotional & porny parts. I need to take breaks in both cases.

I usually have so many tabs open already (100+ is pretty normal for me), I don't tend to keep them open in tabs unless I have multiple I'm reading, in which case, time for a new window! *already has 5* *wince*

Most of the time, though, I bookmark it, which... has the effect that I tend to forget about them. Hmm. This new window thing may be a better idea.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
100+?? How would that even fit on your tabs bar? Confused nonnie.

I always seem to desperately need to go play a game or three of Freecell or landscape a plot of land in Sim City 2000 right in the middle of dramatic scenes, and sex scenes. I'm not even the type to get really emotional while reading!

(Now if you want me emotional, look at me when I write instead! Maybe it's because I'm more heavily invested in my RP characters.)
