I could not agree with you more, OP.

See, I could even accept it as a motivation if JKR didn't try to play it off as tragic and romantic and instead had kept Snape as the bitter, petty man that he WAS.

Because, yes, some people never get over first loves. But Snape's behavior is entirely unsympathetic to me and I found the attempts at characterizing him as a "romantic hero" in the last books to be laughable. Just my opinion, though.

Snape's not a romantic by any stretch of the imagination, but he's def a hero, albeit a flawed one.

idk, even Rowling has flat out said in interviews that she doesn't consider him a heroic character, just a brave one

What? She never tried to play him off as tragic or romantic. She's said explicitly in interviews Snape wouldn't give a shit for Harry if he hadn't been Lily's son, and that he was not a nice guy. I think you're ascribing Snapefen crap to JKR.
