It literally made me laugh out loud.

Brava. OP.

"Muggle" IS an ethnic slur.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if this will be the wanky secret that secret 3 yearns for. Or maybe fs is finally, finally tired of Snape wank (...nah)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends if there's anyone who's going to go all-out in support of him TBH

that's always the question

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You have poor reading comprehension.

If Snape wanted Harry dead he wouldn't have spent the rest of his life protecting him.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you might be the one with poor reading comprehension. The secret said that Snape should be dead instead of Lily (which is true; he did beg Dumbledore to sell out James and Harry to save Lily after all) not that he wished that Harry would die during the series itself

At first I was sooo confused. "Wait, fangirls hate Neville for that now?" Nicely done.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I could not agree with you more, OP.

See, I could even accept it as a motivation if JKR didn't try to play it off as tragic and romantic and instead had kept Snape as the bitter, petty man that he WAS.

Because, yes, some people never get over first loves. But Snape's behavior is entirely unsympathetic to me and I found the attempts at characterizing him as a "romantic hero" in the last books to be laughable. Just my opinion, though.

This is pretty spot on!

Though, I do think that he hates Hermione partially for the reasons you stated, and partially because she's a smart muggleborn-who-isn't-Lily and is friends with someone who looks like James (with Lily's eyes).

Curse that eleven year old boy who's parent's were murdered! /sarcasm

Image one: a frog with the text “If Neville had been the Chosen One, Lily wouldn’t be dead. I hate him!

Image two: a screen cap of Hermione Granger with the text “A smart Gryffindor muggle-born who isn’t Lily? I hate her!”

Image three: a screen cap of Harry potter with the text: Should be dead instead of Lily. Hate him!

Image four: wolf or dog prints with the text “It’s all their fault I called my bestie an ethnic slur. Hate em all.”

Main text: I think the idea that Snape’s love for Lily made the character deeper is hilarious. That is some 12 y/o girl motivation right there.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a major Snape fan all the way from Book 1 through Book 6, but I agree. The revelation that his motivation was love for Lily took a huge and immediate chunk out of his complexity for me. Suddenly it's not about realisations of right or wrong, or loyalty to Dumbledore, or an extremely embittered and petty man trying to do the right thing after being shocked out of his teenage rage. Suddenly, it's about a goddamn teenage crush that becomes a lifelong penance because the stupid git accidentally got her killed when said teenage rage made him support the person who murdered her.

I mean, it's just not as impressive. "I got my would-be-girlfriend killed and switched sides out of personal guilt" doesn't have quite the same gravitas as "I'm an extremely bitter git who nonetheless got uneasy with hanging around a mass-murderer, so I switched to the side of people I still mostly hate but who don't go around killing people".

I'm not a Snape fan either, but this is every Snape post on tumblr. We get it already, he's not a great character and his fans must be delusional. Can we move on?

That's a pretty simplistic view of psychology and a childish reading of Snape, but as I'm sure there are plenty of people queuing up to call me a Snapewife or somesuch, I'll just leave it at that.

Ugh THANK YOU. HP is full of shallow characters and cartoonish psychology, but Snape's motivation/backstory has to be one of the worst, most childish things I've ever heard of.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think it makes him deeper because "I hate everyone because I'm just a villain" is really, really shallow. So, by comparison, having some sort of motivation has to be an improvement, at least in terms of talking about character development.

I have a follower who claims to be an 'older' member of fandom, but whenever I reblog posts pointing out just what a dickwiggler Snape was, she never fails to type up some kind of long, teal deer of a post on why we're all wrong and his lifelong friendzoned butthurt is justified because he was crapped on for his entire life.

I guess age means nothing when you life woobie-fying asshole characters.

Well, it did make him deeper, technically. It didn't necessarily make him a better person, which I think is what some of those people are implying.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's not the only reason he hates Sirius, though? Snape's a jerk and I'll never excuse his behavior to children, but his reasons for disliking Sirius were valid.

I don't think that's why he was a douche to Neville either. That was him being an impatient dick teacher who couldn't deal with kids who were on what he thought was his level.
