(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, it's just not as impressive. "I got my would-be-girlfriend killed and switched sides out of personal guilt" doesn't have quite the same gravitas as "I'm an extremely bitter git who nonetheless got uneasy with hanging around a mass-murderer, so I switched to the side of people I still mostly hate but who don't go around killing people".

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I really loved Snape before that revelation, because he was so REAL. He's basically the wizarding equivalent of a reformed skinhead. A poor kid with a shitty homelife who gets caught up in a gang, gets the gang tat and the 'family' and does increasingly awful shit, and then later realizes what a massive fuck-up he is.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)(It also feels incredibly unconvincing to me, but I found pretty much all the romantic relationships in the series unconvincing and tacked on and very arrested adolescent, to the point I mostly thought JKR just doesn't want to write romance but feels obligated because teenagers or something. It always amazed me that ship wars were so intense over a text where I felt there was so little actual convincing romantic or sexual tension between just about anyone.)
