When I read LOTR, I knew absolutely NOTHING about the story going in. I was so sure that they would've destroyed the ring by the end of the first book and then some new problem was going to come up that was going to be the issue for the next books (or they wouldn't have destroyed the ring and that quest became irrelevant or was somehow subsumed by something else). I guess I just didn't believe the ring itself could be that relevant the whole way through or that the Fellowship's quest really was going to be the basis for all three books.
