Wrong

What are some things in fiction or real life that you predicted happening a certain way and ended being proven totally wrong about? It doesn't necessarily have to be a negative thing; it could be something that you thought would go really badly but actually ended up being a good thing

example: Before HIMYM's finale and when people were rampantly speculating that the Mother would be revealed to be dead, I was 100% positive that they wouldn't kill her off because I thought it would be too cliche and stupid and I rolled my eyes at all the people who firmly believed it would happen. It turns out that I was terribly wrong and the show WAS that stupid. I would also like to take this time to formally apologize to the people I doubted.

Justin Bieber. Just...Justin Bieber. When he first became well known and people were constantly hating on him and saying things about him that were frankly disturbing considering his age at the time, I felt sorry for him and even defended him although I didn't care for his music. He seemed like a pretty nice kid for a while who seemed to treat his fans well at least and I thought that he might grow up to be a decent dude. Words cannot describe how wrong I was. So, so wrong.

Yeah, but despite how he turned out, he was still just a kid when some horrible things were being said about him and it's not kosher to hate on a kid like that. So I don't think you were wrong to defend that aspect of it.

You're right. I don't really regret the defending since I think that people went way over the line when making fun of him years ago. I was just genuinely surprised that he turned out to be such an asshole, even though I probably shouldn't be (a lot child pop stars or actors seem not to turn out very well or go through some really rough patches after all)

I've heard his father is part of his 'entourage', that his dad was there when he was underage and trying to get into clubs. If that's true, how he turned out was sort of in the cards. He probably has the same kind of parenting Lindsay Lohan had.

It wouldn't surprise me if his dad had something to do with it because he's a HUGE asshole. He's one of those dead beats who completely checked out of their kid's life until they got successful and then suddenly he realized how important fatherhood was. There were a lot of rumors that his mom had to stop Bieber from giving his dad too much money and I don't really doubt it.

OMG, Nonnie, I thought he was adorable when he first appeared on the scene. Just a cutie pie.

I feel really sorry for him now, though, because I think it is extremely difficult to handle celebrity as an adult much less as a child. I think some of the important things that most children learn when they're growing up is that their actions have consequences, eating all the cookies in the jar is bad for you, and that you can't always get what you want. When your fame insulates you from consequences and you can afford not just the jar of cookies but the whole damn factory, it skews your whole outlook.

Obviously, I am not condoning his behavior, but I think you've got to have super dedicated parents to prevent a child star from going down a dark path, and looking at the other commments in this thread, he doesn't appear to have had that. :(

That's a good point. I do feel sorry for him because it seems like he wasn't given the right tools to handle his sudden and immense popularity/hatedom (though, like you said, it doesn't really excuse his current behavior). I really hope he eventually stops acting like such a douchecanoe. He doesn't exactly have a lot of goodwill left to burn

And yeah, it seems like he didn't really have parents who were quite equipped to help him manage everything. His mother seems like a decent woman (especially considering her frankly horrific childhood) but I don't think she was prepared for how famous/infamous her son would become. His dad is just a straight up asshole though. Among other things, he was in the news in early December for allegedly throwing his dog off of a balcony (the dog is alive thank goodness, but she did have injuries) and before that he was arrested and charged with breaking a teenage girl's jaw. He basically walked into his son's life for the first time since he was born once he started making money and he's been mooching off of him and encouraging terrible behavior ever since. The worst part is that Bieber, by all accounts, either isn't aware or refuses to acknowledge how toxic his father is and even refers to him as his "superhero." It's actually really, really sad.

Oh wow. I didn't know anything at all about his background. That's so awful.

:(

When I read LOTR, I knew absolutely NOTHING about the story going in. I was so sure that they would've destroyed the ring by the end of the first book and then some new problem was going to come up that was going to be the issue for the next books (or they wouldn't have destroyed the ring and that quest became irrelevant or was somehow subsumed by something else). I guess I just didn't believe the ring itself could be that relevant the whole way through or that the Fellowship's quest really was going to be the basis for all three books.

In Tokyo Ghoul, I was convinced that the really cool ghoul-hunter who wanted justice was secretly a ghoul and was seeking atonement for his crimes. I'm kind of amazed I was that wrong.

I was wrong about how badly the Dexter series finale it would be. It was much, much, much, much worse than I thought.

SPOILERS FOR THE WALKING DEAD MID-SEASON FINALE

I never thought they would kill Beth. I don't know why because it makes sense.

I never in a million years thought that Dexter would end that terribly either. If someone had told me years ago that the show would end with Deb being pulled off life support about being in a vegetative state and Dexter becoming a goddamn lumberjack I would have thought they were insane. Hell, I didn't watch the episode for about a week after it had aired and I was spoiled several times about him becoming a luberjack and I still didn't believe it. I just thought it was some kind of fandom joke. Like, maybe people were just making fun of the way he dressed or something.

he's a lumberjack and he's OK

I never thought they'd kill Beth because it seemed like they wanted to go Bethyl in the tv show, and while it was obvious they were going to kill someone in the mid-season finale, I really thought it would be Carol of the two of them, because Beth is young and pretty/Vasquez Always Dies/etc.

I'm not sure I like how they did it, because ideally I wanted Beth and Carol to escape on their own or at least have some interaction, but color me pleasantly surprised that they didn't do exactly what I expected.

Then again the series seems pretty good at subverting the Vasquez Always Dies trope (what with Andrea surviving longer than Lori, Michonne surviving longer than Andrea, and now Carol surviving longer than Beth) which is pretty fantastic, imo.

Back in the '90s, I really didn't think Reality TV would take off. SO SO WRONG.

This is such a dumb one, but it sprung into my head straight away - I really didn't think they'd kill off Marian in Robin Hood (BBC) or that Guy would be the one to kill her. That shot my OTP to pieces.

I was the exact same with HIMYM.

I sincerely thought the first Percy Jackson movie was going to be a mostly faithful adaptation since the book seemed so easy to turn into a film. I remember going to comms and telling people calmly that it's OK that Annabeth is a brunette and that the actors are obviously over 11-years-old. Surely, the story will be faithful enough. How hard is it to tell the tale of a kid who is the son of a powerful Greek God and he and his two friends have to travel America to find Zeus's stolen lightening bolt as their plans don't go at all according to plan?

Nope. Not at all. Made me realize how spoiled LOTR and HP were to get more faithful adaptations.

A Machine for Pigs. I was SURE the twist with the twins that was going to be something other than they were dead. Anything else. It was just too obvious and cliche if they were dead. The writers had to be better than that, right?

Nope.
