I was the exact same with HIMYM.

I sincerely thought the first Percy Jackson movie was going to be a mostly faithful adaptation since the book seemed so easy to turn into a film. I remember going to comms and telling people calmly that it's OK that Annabeth is a brunette and that the actors are obviously over 11-years-old. Surely, the story will be faithful enough. How hard is it to tell the tale of a kid who is the son of a powerful Greek God and he and his two friends have to travel America to find Zeus's stolen lightening bolt as their plans don't go at all according to plan?

Nope. Not at all. Made me realize how spoiled LOTR and HP were to get more faithful adaptations.
