Text: NS Reader inserts are a thing in my fandom.
Kinda secret: I got so annoyed with the quality of them, I started a sock puppet account just for reader inserts to one up the dreck that was already there.
Secret: I’m actually kinda enjoying myself now. I take commissions for them and enter contests and everything.

What are reader inserts?

Reader inserts are stories (generally) follow a plot centered around a particular canon character (or group of) and an OC, who is "You" or ( ), or given a name, still meant to represent you, the reader. It is written in second POV, and for some reason, I have noticed, is generally looked down upon.

(I've got nothing against it, I enjoy it from time to time, especially when I first entered the world of fanfic. Most people have a problem with it because the plots and writing can be very poor. Not all, but quite a few. The OC/you generally tends to be a Mary Sue. I, and many others, find it highly enjoyable, if it's well written and "you" isn't a total Sue) :]

Do you find that your previously dismissive opinion of the people who wrote self-inserts has changed now that you have more insight into why people find them enjoyable to write?

I'm glad that you're contributing to bettering the quality of self inserts. I personally enjoy them from time to time, and it's annoying to have to wade through poor quality fics (I was spoiled by a lovely quality 2nd POV archive when I entered fandom). Thanks! Also, it's funny how incredibly enjoyable it can be to write them...

what fandom, btw? If you care to share...

PS- you'd be surprised how the dearth of quality fics can spur a reader's turn into writing. :]

Well, if you can stop the infestation of the Pink Fluffy Clouds with Unicorns Puking Rainbows then I bow to you OP!

It creeps me the hell out when I randomly see a Reader!Fic and it assumes I'd cuddle with anyone!
