I changed my URL exactly once when I realized a coworker knew it and might easily find my fanfic/LJ/whatever. (Though if you search for Othellia, you can still trace it back to my new account name thanks to a couple of old autotagged asks. And of course it's been years since then so I set up a othellia.tumblr.com redirect.)

I think a good 1/3 of the people I follow have changed their names. I have a vague recollection of who they were, but not really. Holidays are less annoying if you're one of the people who constantly follow them because they'll generally change it right back, but I can't imagine the confusion for casual browsers during that time.

A permanent ID vs changeable username would work nice a la FFN.

a la...everywhere, right?

I wasn't even aware that you were allowed to change your name on Tumblr. That seems patently ridiculous to me.

FFN lets you change your username, but also has a permanent link that uses an ID you can't change.

So if I were to change my FFN name, this link would break:
https://www.fanfiction.net/~othellia

But this link would stay intact:
https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1153473

I wouldn't have as much of a trouble with tumblr's name changes if all the reblog links were based on a perma-id instead of the changeable username.

That makes sense. But I still wish people would not change their names on sites like that - it seems very confusing. (Or at least, not do it often/on a whim)

Yeah, I like the option of being able to change your name but not all the time.

When I first started browsing the interwebs, I'd just use my middle name and birthyear, but after a couple years I wanted to distance myself from such identifying information. This was around the time I was into Naruto and was also kind of angsty, so all my screennames were things that would've probably made emo!Sasuke proud. Then I started to grow out of that and I've been Othellia for almost nine years now, with a couple of alts whenever I want an account that's not connected to my main presence.

There's actually a way to set up a javascript redirect that will seemlessly fix links to your old url. My old url was refreshingenchantress, and several months back i switched to ertherarmy, but this link here will work fine: http://refreshingenchantress.tumblr.com/post/81049500438/terracosmonaut-tales-of-series-dress-up . I got the code for that from here.

Unfortunately, no one ever fucking using redirects, so you're screwed and stuck hopping over about 50 different "i changed my url" placeholders.

Dreamwidth and Livejournal also allow names changes. But they charge $15 for the privilege, so people only do it if they REALLY mean it. I prefer this arrangement to either "free name changes anytime" or "no name changes ever."

LJ also changes all user name tags to the new one, so you don't get broken links. I don't know what would happen if you imputed the URL of the old name though.

I suspect, due to coding basis, DW works the same.

Yeah, that makes a lot more sense actually. Sometimes it's really necessary or important.

I've been consistently using my real name online since the early 90s, and have had the same email address the entire time. Tumblr's attitude towards identity is INCOMPREHENSIBLE to me.
