Ok why do/did people use them when trying to interact with others?

Because unlike Tumblr, LJ gave you -- via custom filters -- the options to share different content with all sorts of different groups and people without necessarily annoying one or the other by shoving things at them they weren't interested in.

I used to have a personal filter for close friends, an original fic filter for people who were interested in giving me feedback and critique, filters for specific individuals for whenever they or I couldn't get to emails etc. That left the main content of my LJ free of all the extraneous stuff and solely fandom-related, which was what most people friended me for in the first place.

On tumblr, by contrast, you have to get everything a person (AND all their friends who they decide to reblog) decides to post, whether you're interested or not. Your options (that don't involve having to break the site with add-ons just to make it functional) are either unfollow or trawl through a bunch of stuff you don't want to see.

I've known LJers who posted on several very different subjects, and who might (for example) add you to their Medieval History group and my James Thurber group, if those were the subjects you wanted to follow them on.

Of course, if they used tags properly, you could also friend them AND filter on selected tags. (Admittedly I can't remember if that's a paid feature or not.)

I've defriended people on LJ because they indiscriminately posted multiple times a day without once using tags. It was annoying and exhausting as I had no way of filtering their output down to the subset of subjects I'd wanted to follow them for. Basically, this is my problem with tumblr.

P.S. I've also known people who are shy about their pornier fanfic and use groups to selectively share with people they were comfortable with. It's not a coy effort to get boost their "friend numbers" - quite the contrary.
