Dog with tartar on teeth

If your dog has tartar on their teeth, is it always a better idea to get them scraped, or is scraping ever a bad idea (like, for an older dog, can it weaken their teeth badly?)

And yeah, I'm going to ask around to a few places including professionals, not just take all my advice from FS, but I thought I'd ask you guys as well. :)

I think it's usually done under anaesthetic, and I've had a vet opt not to suggest it for a very elderly cat of mine because of the risks of the anaesthetic. She didn't mention possible harm to his teeth. Good luck finding information on this!
