But I like being abused and raped, why shouldn't I condone what I like?

No one says you shouldn't. But I think that regardless of the feelings of the victim, rapists and abusers are terrifying - and I dare say a lot of people share this opinion - so it's pretty understandable that your sympathetic portrayal of them will anger people. It's not because anyone wants to tell you how to feel, it's because people who are willing to hurt others* are scum, period.

*that is to say, I'm talking specifically about those who don't care if their victim is enjoying it or not. Consensual "rapists" aren't true rapists, nor are consensual "abusers" true abusers.

Ah? But Christian Grey is millions of women's dream boat.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a rich, handsome guy who starts out abusive but gets changed by the Power of Love. The real fantasy of that series is that he gets "fixed," so what's left are all the emotional highs of an abusive relationship without any of the lows.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
...Doesn't that make it not an abusive relationship?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It starts out as one, but he changes, and stops abusing her. I mean it's pretty textbook. He stalks her, he controls her, he engages in crazymaking, he sets her up to fail, he beats her when she displeases him, he tells her that things are her choice but punishes her if she chooses wrong, he makes thinks that should be about her about him inst3ad (like her graduation), he tells her she can't leave him and that he'll track her down if she tries, he breaks into her place and rapes her as punishment when she tricks him into thinking she's breaking up with him... It absolutely is abusive in the beginning.

But she likes all that, so I don't see how it is abusive.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She says that she likes it, but she always reacts to his behavior (even after they get married and their relationship supposedly improves) as if she's completely, genuinely terrified of him.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
But she DOESN'T like it while,it's happening. She's miserable and afraid of him. After the rape scene, she sits there and sobs. She's very attracted to him, and she likes when they have "normal" sex. But she hates the BDSM stuff and part of how things get better is she gets him to stop doing it. She definitely doesn't like being hit at all and dreads it (and this isn't just my interpretation. EL James has said she set out to write about someone who didn't like BDSM being forced into it).

I'm starting to think you haven't read the books.

I want Mr. Grey to do all that to me, it's hot and he's shown he never hurts anyone even when he "abuses" people. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't he forcibly institutionalize one of his subs after he got bored with her?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think anon thinks you can only hurt someone physically.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I guarantee you'd stop finding it hot if you actually wound up in a truly abusive relationship. This kind of shit slowly kills your soul. Also, the books themselves don't present it as good. Christian is portrayed as broken, and these are all the things that make him broken. Ana "fixes" him, which is the big arc of the series.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds hot.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I sincerely hope you never wind up with an abusive SO.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I sincerely hope you do. :3

Oh my god, no. Just stop. Saying stuff like this is not all right.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're consenting to it, it's not rape. That's part of the point.
