I know your pain, OP. I watched and/orread bits and pieces of Slam Dunk, Hajime no Ippo and Eyeshield 21, yet they seem so underrated. They deserve so much more love.

OP

Slam Dunk's ending left me devastated for a fandom, it's like the most tragic end of any manga ever, I was so disappointed there wasn't a fandom to fill the hole in my heart after it.

You should read Rookies (it doesn't have an anime, but it does have a live action adaption that appears to be based on a shoujo manga with the same plot). I'm pimping it as good as I can, hah.

BUT it's really good it spoiled me for sports mangas in which teenage guys just acts like teenage guys and think about sex all the time, read porn and they're just a big bunch of dumbasses and Aniya's the strongest and also the one that gets the girls so of course the rest just kinda follows him.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I never was in that fandom, but from an outsider's perspective, it looked like Eyeshield21 was one of those really hyped fandoms. Maybe that was just in the small part of anime/manga fandom I was around at the time... huh.

Don't lose hope OP

KnB and Slam Dunk is going to have a crossover!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Please no. Slam Dunk is too god for KnB.

are those guys in the lower picture all taking a shit or something?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I thought they were all jerking off.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
For me, there are two things that are incredibly shallow but without which I cannot enjoy a sports anime:

1) Good art - I like the HQ anime and love Free, not into Yowapeda at all. The art in the pics you posted looks excruciatingly 90s, and so doesn't interest me.

2) Lots and lots of slash fanservice - See again: HQ and Free!, and from what I gather Yowapeda too. I can't speak for the older series you mentioned, but if I can't get my exciting sports arcs AND a healthy smothering of homoeroticism, it's not going to tickle my fancy.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations, you're the cancer killing sports manga/anime!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Poor anon :(, I smell trolling with the art comment but I'll play:

1) Plenty of older sports manga actually had gay characters. I remember one popular baseball one from 80s but can't find the title at the moment. There had been a boxing one as well.

2) My fav would forever be Captain Tsubasa, it had plenty of subtext, however character design hadn't been that nice (action scenes were).

3) Never read that but I recall Prince of Tennis being popular for the reasons you like, started in 1999, had nice art and fan service.

I never tried Free because I had been a swimmer and um ... it looks very ... "kawaii, sparkly, swimmy, lol" ... un-sporty.

What slash fanservice in Haikyuu?? Were you watching a different show than me?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Okiedokie... Uhm... Slam Dunk is not very homoerotic, Rookies is, it has guys accidentally kissing and deep speeches about opening your heart... Idk where I'm going with this

if you haven't seen prince of tennis yet, please do lmao

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Most people only care about the shiny new stuff sadly.

But it this case it may also be because even if they all are sport animanga, the new series are very different from the old ones.

Are the guys in the lower picture turning into something else?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
There's muscle definition, and then there's your skin looks like it's bubbling in preparation for transformation - like in Species and other assorted horror/sci-fi movies.

The things I'd do for a proper anime adaptation of Eyeshield 21...

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here yes I'd do a retail job for six months if I could get a good, popular Eyeshield 21 adaption...

I don't think these are the correct manga/anime to compare to the new ones. The new ones are more similar to Prince of Tennis.

The problem here is that it's not the sports part that's made sports anime so popular, it's the hot guy cast and slashy fanservice. (That said I sorta feel you on this -- even though it's not an older series, the lack of fandom for Giant Killing makes me continually sad.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Someone else who laments the lack of a Giant Killing fandom! We'll cry together.

(That being said, I know the art etc. isn't always traditionally "pretty" in the fanservice sense, I thought there was still plenty of stuff that slash fans could latch onto? Did it just fall through the cracks somehow?)

...is this secret showing up as a totally-unreadable negative-color version for anyone else?

I take notes on secrets on a Sticky note, and my comment for this one is "06 how is this not failbar'd. Good luck transcriptanon."

Maybe it'll make you happy to hear that it's working that way in some cases. Me and my pals got into sports anime because of Free! and Kuroko no Basket and now we're watching Slam Dunk and Eyeshield because of that.

Image: two manga-style cast shots of sports teams. The top is younger, mixed gender, and fully clothed, the older is older, all-male, and all about the washboard abs.

Text: when I’m extra PMS-y it can actually make me cry that the increased popularity in sports animanga like Free!, Yowapeda and Haikyuul hasn’t brought the oldies but goodies back to life.
