The problem here is that it's not the sports part that's made sports anime so popular, it's the hot guy cast and slashy fanservice. (That said I sorta feel you on this -- even though it's not an older series, the lack of fandom for Giant Killing makes me continually sad.)

Someone else who laments the lack of a Giant Killing fandom! We'll cry together.

(That being said, I know the art etc. isn't always traditionally "pretty" in the fanservice sense, I thought there was still plenty of stuff that slash fans could latch onto? Did it just fall through the cracks somehow?)

I think it's the lack of 'traditionally' hot guys. I love the series but most of the cast is not exactly pretty (well, Gino aside of course). You could poke someone's eye out with those noses. Plus the cast is all adults instead of high schoolers, and people seem to gravitate more towards stuff set in school (which is sad because one of the reasons I love Giant Killing is because the cast are adults. Since it's league play instead of one-loss-and-you're-out tournaments like most sports anime do I feel like the matches are more exciting, because I can't predict who will win).

Aww, I always thought Tsubaki was kinda cute! Actually I liked a lot of them, and especially liked that they all looked distinct rather than just Standard Bishounen Cast.

The ages of the cast was certainly part of the appeal for me too. I have nothing whatsoever against high school settings, but sometimes it's good to have issues and conflicts that arise from something different. The professional sports setting was also a draw, though to be truthful I'd have picked it up regardless because I'm a huge football fan and any depiction of a sport I actually know would've gotten my attention. Although I wonder if, like you say, the league-based nature of it meant that those looking for something with the quick-fire pace of elimination-style tournaments didn't find it moved along fast enough?

I think compared to series' like KnB or Free! the art is most definitely on the quirky side. But lately, comparably non-traditionally pretty artwork like YowaPeda -and outside sports' series, something like Attack on Titan- are still getting great, thriving fandoms and it makes me even more confused as to why GK never did. *sad* If it came out now, it makes you wonder if the artwork would potentially hold it back as much.

Tsubaki is a cutie, and I can see people liking Akasaki and maybe Sera, but then you've got guys like Kuroda and Murakoshi who aren't exactly pretty boys (though I agree with you about liking the distinct character designs. One of the things I like about Giant Killing is that even the one-off guys from opposing teams all look different). And I think even stuff like YowaPedal, yeah it's on the quirky side but at the end of the day most of the cast I think fits pretty squarely into a more shounen-y cute guys style of art -- from what I've seen, the most popular characters from YowaPedal are Toudou and Makishima and Toudou's intentionally bishounen, while Maki looks a little weird but he's still got the long wavy hair and skinny arms and general pretty boy build (meanwhile big beefy guy Tadokoro doesn't get a lot of attention in fandom). Giant Killing's guys are more...'realistic,' I guess?

I wonder if part of the issue is simply that most of the really popular sports anime seem to be shounen series, and Giant Killing is seinen so it's just not pitching itself to the same demographic or hitting the same story beats that tend to draw fandom.

OP of this secret... Yay, another fandomless series I might now have to watch, haha
