People who bring up awful things other people have said as though that proves a point. Oh, so and so random person on the internet said something racist. And….? What does that have to do with MY criticism? Unless you can point to something I have personally said that's racist, I'm going to think you're a dipshit.

People can go pretty far with this and it weirds me out. I have a friend who uses Tumblr for book promotion and has had people tell her that she should reblog a post from a different source because the post was fine but the person she reblogged it from said something bad before. Multiple people have messaged her about this several times like it was urgent information that she would obviously be grateful for them sharing.

I don't expect everyone to be like me (I'm terrible at holding a grudge; usually it takes more effort for me to remind myself that I'm supposed to have a problem with someone than to let it go unless there's a long history of terrible shit), everyone draws their lines in different places, but sometimes this stuff just seems weird.

DA - Wow, those people sound like weirdos. People can get way too obsessed over policing themselves and everyone around them for anything bad they might've said.

It's amazing, really. Right after the term "ad hominem" lost all meaning due to misuse, Tumblr adopted it as its main form of argument. On Tumblr, the content of an statement is MUCH less relevant than the identity of the person making it, which is (used to be) the definition of argumentum ad hominem.
