Re: I know y'all are probably tired of hearing about tumblr SJWs, but I need to vent.

Tumblr preaches self-education? A lot of what I've seen is people wearing their lack of education as a badge of honor because apparently the fact that there are serious social problems in academia means that it's all completely worthless.

Are you referring to the people who go on about how they learned more from tumblr than they did from school?

I think it's good to criticize the current state of schooling and formal education in general, but it seems that most of their "criticism" boils down to "waaaaaaah I failed my exams because I spent all my time goofing off on tumblr when I could have been studying!"

I was thinking more of medievalpoc. People who try to set themselves up as authorities but when they're confronted on their terrible methodology start talking about how academia is racist and sexist.

lol

I wonder when the cognitive dissonance will overwhelm them

We must have very different dashes, because on mine if you don't self educate yourself (instead of relying on whitewashed American trash or other Tumblr users to 'do the work for you'), you are equivalent of an ignorant puddle of filth not fit for further conversation.

They talk about "educating yourself" but they don't seem to have a lot of respect for individual thought, which to me is a big part of read education. You have to read exactly the right thing and completely avoid anything they disagree with (which you should disagree with too) and not question any of it.

ngl, any time someone trots out the "eductate yourself" remark, I just assume that they don't know the thing they're ranting about well enough to do so, and thus their opinion is rendered immediately invalid to me.

When did the education aspect of activism disappear?

same. And the "I'm not here to educate you!!!" line. I guess you're only here to... piss and moan and not try to improve things, then?

this is often true.

+1

I'll also assume they care more about appearing smart and superior rather than actually being smart.

They clearly aren't interested in opening discussions and potentially affecting change with the way people think in any meaningful way. Otherwise why send people away to potentially unreliable and misinformed sources ("I'm not here to educate you, go Google it."), when they supposedly know and care so much about the subject themselves? Aren't they themselves the very best source of the information they want people to find?

If anyone came to me asking about e.g the issues surrounding the various ways I'm a non-privileged person then I'd jump at the chance to share my experience in the hope that actually getting a real person's perspective on the issue would be educational in and of itself. I sure as hell wouldn't hoard it to myself and dismiss someone away to get misinformed by the internet. Or worse, by Tumblr.
