Re: I know y'all are probably tired of hearing about tumblr SJWs, but I need to vent.

That's kind of a real shitty argument

Argument for what and why? This isn't tumblr you can't just say problematic and walk away.

The idea that the African slave trade is particularly relevant to a discussion of the Atlantic slave trade and slavery in the Americas. Even if you're not using it to imply that the Africans were complicit in and therefore 'deserved' slavery in the Americas, it's still as irrelevant as talking about ancient Greek slavery. And no, the fact that many people might not be aware that slavery was widespread in ancient Greece doesn't make it relevant either.

da

The post is partially about people being ignorant to the fact that not all violence in Africa was caused by Europeans so it seems relevant to mention that non-white people enslaved each other, which is something that a lot of people don't know or ignore because it doesn't fit into their Euro and American centric notions about slavery

The premise of this thread was not that the existence of other forms of slavery somehow diminished the gravity of the Atlantic slave trade. It was that it's sad and ridiculous that people aren't taught that other forms even existed. And to me it's really sad and frustrating because not all of those traditions have actually ended, and people aren't taught that slavery is still going on in the modern world.

Considering that a good chunk of Tumblr users think they know better than everyone else, their peers, their teachers, their parents, and everyone else on Tumblr?

Not really.

I'm not saying that the fact slavery existed in many parts of Africa (and, well, most other places in some form or fashion at some point) makes the European slave trade any better, I just think it's dumb that some people on tumblr like to imagine that Africa was this weirdly idyllic and peaceful place with no strife or enslavement until the Europeans got their hands on it. They had as much violence and shittiness going on as anyone else did

Sure, I guess. It's just, like I said above, really pretty irrelevant to the Atlantic slave trade.

Yeah but NO ONE SAID THAT.

the original post wasn't about the Atlantic slave trade, it was just about ignorant SJWs who don't have a good grasp of African history

But...the discussion isn't about the Atlantic slave trade. It's about pre-colonial history.

It's just as dumb as the idea that Africa is a cultural, political, and geographical monolith, just along a different line of thought. :/

People really do sort of set Africa aside in their minds. I think to many it's just a vague entity that we took slaves from and that's still super backwards* today. Plus jungles, and lions. But it's a continent with many countries, many governments, many people, many things both wonderful and terrible, and a history of its own.

*parts of it are of course, and parts of it are really modern, and there's everything in between.
