I actually like his looks but I was really put off by his gestures and facial expressions. They were this really weird mix of super reserved and really exaggerated and it didn't always fit the scene. It looked to very rehearsed and I can't decide if it was done that way on purpose or if it just was his way of doing it and nobody really said anything against it. Both are possibilities.

(I also still think that his way of moving and reacting lend themselves pretty well to a blind/half blind Thranduil headcanon and I'm a big fan of that, so...)

I think it was done on purpose. Thranduil in the movie strikes me as somebody who has a lot of emotions bubbling just below the surface but is trying desperately not to let them show.
