Well, "uncomfortably perfect" is what elves were supposed to be. It's a great part in why people found Galadriel so intimidating. Not that you have to like it. But it wasn't some weird decision they made; it was Tolkien's concept.

Actually Galadriel looked less made-to-be-so-perfect than Thranduil, imo. I got used to elves being perfect, sure, but Thranduil was too perfect it was just ridiculous. I think it's the makeup and Lee's perfectly swift moves during the last movie that made it seem a bit too surreal to me.

Or maybe all elves we've seen so far in the movies weren't a good demonstration of what Tolkien described them to be except for Thranduil now? Who knows.

I find him creepy, too, though not because he's 'perfect' --- LOTR Legolas was perfect --- but I was amazed how attractive and interesting Lee Pace is as himself in interviews. As Thranduil, I find his characterisation too camp, and I also think he's too young. I would have preferred a Thranduil nearer Elrond's age (and, at the very least, older than Orlando Bloom).

/ramble.

Whoops, sorry, meant to reply to the secret itself...

I think the point was to make him otherworldly beautiful. Elves are sort of perfect beings, their arrogant king would be that way x 100.

I also think Thranduil especially is supposed to be hella creepy. Beautiful but kind of callous and terrifying, like the sídhe Tolkien based the wood elves on.

Elves aren't supposed to be adorably scruffy, stubbled guys, though. It seems weird to wonder why they weren't written as the type of look you're into.

*It seems incredibly egotistical to wonder why they weren't written/designed as the look OP is into.

I wish he'd been more perfect. It's the eyebrow thing. I don't see it working for an Elf. I could mostly overlook it by the last film but if they had been plucked some, then he would've been perfect (would've liked pale eyebrows too).

I think Lee looks gorgeous in everything. My biggest complaint is the characterization. Lee does an absolutely WONDERFUL job with the material and I think he makes a fantastic Elf. BUT, he is not Thranduil. That dragon-scar is too weird. His dickishness is too much even for Thranduil. It's like they're trying to make him Thingol but since they don't have the rights to make him Thingol, then they have to invent something to make him like Thingol without him being like Thingol. Just make him Thranduil already!

I'm torn. I liked the acting and some of the choices but I hated others, and it's hard to separate the two.

It's the first thing I've seen him in and I think he's fantastic.

I only saw a picture of him as not-an-elf for today for the first time, and didn't recognise him. They did a great job in hair, costume and makeup to make him elflike. Tolkien elves were supposed to inspire terror as well as be beautiful.

AGREED.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
They made Legolas even worse in my opinion. Something about those glass blue, unblinking eyes and Uncanny Valley face... my memories as a Legolas fan during LotR have never recovered.

First, going to have to agree to disagree because while Thranduil was kind of a douche, he was completely gorgeous to me. Lee is gorgeous, and Thranduil is even more gorgeous (unlike Armitage vs. Thorin where I find Armitage hot and Thorin not so much). Second, elves are kind of supposed to look rather perfect. That is part of their thing.

Actually, come to think of it, it is weird how my taste in men has changed since the LOTR trilogy came out. Because I was super into Aragorn then and kind of meh on Legolas now and going back and watching, it is the reverse now.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the "uncomfortably perfect" thing was a choice? I mean, elves are supposed to look otherwordly, but we also have to remember that we're not seeing Thranduil's actual face. His real face is horribly scarred by dragon fire, so he wears a glamor at all times. Maybe he over corrected in the other direction?

I think that's part of the point. He's an elf, he's supposed to be a bit creepy.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I actually like his looks but I was really put off by his gestures and facial expressions. They were this really weird mix of super reserved and really exaggerated and it didn't always fit the scene. It looked to very rehearsed and I can't decide if it was done that way on purpose or if it just was his way of doing it and nobody really said anything against it. Both are possibilities.

(I also still think that his way of moving and reacting lend themselves pretty well to a blind/half blind Thranduil headcanon and I'm a big fan of that, so...)

Image: picture of the actor Lee Pace with “YEAS” written in next to a picture of Lee Pace as Thrandil with “NO” written in, and an arrow between them, pointing at Thrandil, with the word “why?” beneath it.

Text: If I didn’t happen to see some of his other roles or his actual self on Tumblr I would’ve forever remembered him as the creepy elf dude on The Hobbit.

Why did they have to give him such heavy makeup and make him look so uncomfortably perfect? It just made him look extremely unpleasant and really ridiculous. Idgi.

Lee is so much hotter than Thranduil. He could’ve made a better elf than that.

I was just peeved that they didn't make his eyebrows as blindingly blonde as his hair. That really annoyed me. Otherwise, I felt a bit underwhelmed by his character.

I feel like I'm really in the minority but I prefer Lee Pace's (and Richard Armitage's) look in the Hobbit compared to their natural looks. I really don't get the fuss about how hot they are outside of their movie looks.

I haven't seen anything else Pace has been in and I have always dislike Thranduil ever since I read the book of The Hobbit. The fact that he looks unsettling seems like a bonus for me.

He's not supposed to look human. Once I got used to it I thought they'd done really well. Legolas on the other hand...

I get where you're coming from, I do. Thranduil IS uncomfortably perfect.

But I love it. I love the "look" of Thrandy. But if I had to choose, I'd choose normal Lee over Thrandy anytime. Lee is gorgeous, yes, but he looks approachable; I could have a conversation with him like he's a normal person (after the initial OMGLEEPACE brain freeze moment). Thrandy is NOT. Not at all. Thrandy is someone you gaze at & admire from afar, but you're too afraid of him to go near him & even if you did, he'd just look at you like you were shit that had the audacity to touch his perfect boots.

TLDR; Love Thranduil, love Lee more.
