Well, "uncomfortably perfect" is what elves were supposed to be. It's a great part in why people found Galadriel so intimidating. Not that you have to like it. But it wasn't some weird decision they made; it was Tolkien's concept.

Actually Galadriel looked less made-to-be-so-perfect than Thranduil, imo. I got used to elves being perfect, sure, but Thranduil was too perfect it was just ridiculous. I think it's the makeup and Lee's perfectly swift moves during the last movie that made it seem a bit too surreal to me.

Or maybe all elves we've seen so far in the movies weren't a good demonstration of what Tolkien described them to be except for Thranduil now? Who knows.

Ah, sorry. I was referring to people in-universe finding book-Galadriel terrifying in part because of her beauty. Tolkien describes most every elf ass looking exactly like you say: "surreal, too perfect", etc. Very uncanny valley.

Eh, everyone has different ideas of how something is supposed to look. If it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you.

Does Tolkien do a lot of describing of the elves' asses? Missed that bit in the books. Perhaps the XXXX hot elf section in the Silmarillion's appendices?

Pfft, sorry. Couldn't help it.

Well, another name for Celeborn is 'Teleporno'. Oh, and Gimli's grandfather was named Gróin.

So maybe there is a super secret XXX History of Middle Earth

movie!Thranduil is a hell of a lot closer to what Tolkien intended than any of Peter Jackson's other elves because while he is icy and cold, he's not utterly devoid of emotion like all the other elves in Peter Jackson's world (excluding Arwen and Tauriel since they're characterised as "too young to be emotionless so they're in love with a mortal and cry when they eventually realise he's going to die").

Well to be fair he's using a glamour to cover his disfigurement, so by definition that WOULD look 'perfect'.

Something to keep in mind is that Thranduil's face was damaged (shown in the second movie) and glamoured to look perfect.

Did this happen in the books ever?

Nope! It's another one of PJ's additions to give more reason for why Thranduil is an obstructive bastard who won't let the dwarves continue on their quest.

[personal profile] anonymous4 2015-01-12 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I find him creepy, too, though not because he's 'perfect' --- LOTR Legolas was perfect --- but I was amazed how attractive and interesting Lee Pace is as himself in interviews. As Thranduil, I find his characterisation too camp, and I also think he's too young. I would have preferred a Thranduil nearer Elrond's age (and, at the very least, older than Orlando Bloom).

/ramble.

Whoops, sorry, meant to reply to the secret itself...

Well, since you did reply to me... ;)

"Older than Orlando Bloom"
I know! I've always pictured Thranduil older as well, although maybe not as old as you do. It bugged me the whole time. Like, you can take Lee Pace and turn him into that, but you can't take Orlando Bloom and turn him into himself? I almost expected Legolas to call Thranduil "brother" instead of "father".

I was so disappointed with DOS, because they CGIed OB's face and made him look bloated. And I was so happy with BOFA, because he was back to normal again!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
It could be possible they did the opposite to his father then. Thranduil looked fine to me in DOS and suddenly, in BOFA, something uncanny had happened to his face and he looked overly photoshopped or something, idk.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-01-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hobbit 3: A guy who looks a bit like Orlando Bloom (Evans) talking to Orlando Bloom in makeup to make him look a lot less like Orlando Bloom.

That, and Thorin's Swimming Pool of Cheese Dip.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, I thought Elrond (and Celeborn) were too old/rough looking. They were supposed to be appear ageless.

And the actor playing Elrond is just fugly, too.

It's like they decided all the "older" male elves were exempt from the perfect/ageless thing, except for Thranduil. But they made him look too Photoshopped, they should have just gotten someone younger.

[personal profile] anonymous4 2015-01-12 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, fugly's in the eye of the beholder... I'd say Elrond's interesting looking. And he has the presence.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I was disturbed by how photoshopped I found Bilbo, never mind Celeborn and Legolas.

Martin Freeman has eye bags. They're part of his face architecture. When I saw early promo material for the film, the eye bags had mysteriously disappeared in a way that made me feel queasy. But at least they couldn't do that in the film itself, right? Nope, they photoshopped his face in the film. Really disturbing. It made him look kind of grey as well, took the life out of him.

There must be other people who were disturbed by this as well, but I've seen no comments anywhere.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
So THAT'S what made him look weird! Man, that's been annoying me for ages and I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Ugh, the movies really needed to stay away from the CGI.

Aww hell naw. You did not just throw shade at Hugo Weaving.

I agree. What really bothered me was that Arwen is described in the books as being the female version of Elrond, which says to me that Elrond must be very beautiful too. I like Hugo but he is not beautiful like that. Also, I was so annoyed when after the LOTR movies came out, a lot of stories mentioned Elrond's receding hair line. :(

My thing with Celeborn is he's such a buff dude. I kind of like him a little bit but he should've been cast as a Man and not an Elf. It just doesn't fit.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Don't forget that Elrond is "Elrond Half-Elven." He looks older, where other "old" male elves (Thranduil, Celeborn) don't, because he's half-human.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but this is a head cannon and not fact. Just because he's Half-Elven doesn't mean anything with regards to his looks. Tolkien never said any such thing. Please put "I believe" or some such qualifier before stating things like this as fact when they are not facts.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I liked how Celeborn looked as a contrast to Galadriel. She's from the west whereas his people hadn't left Middle Earth, and I liked the idea thgat he'd be a little "rougher."
