Just to play devil's avocado here, they did wait until the point where it couldn't affect their ratings at all before they did it.

It's a reference to something but I can't remember what

I'm pretty sure Tracey Morgan said it on 30 Rock at one point; but as it's simple wordplay, I assume it well-predates the show.

Really they had to wait until Nickelodeon stop threatening to cancel them and is also part of the reason they went web only so Nick would LET THEM.

And before you protest Nickelodeon has a really really bad habit and long history of axing shows and not showing the rest of the already made eps when the creators refuse to toe company line.

The finale was broadcast on the network as well though

Yeah, because it was the finale. It's not like Nick as to worry about them slipping in 'offensive' images of same sex kissing anymore.

People can still get upset they showed it at all. I mean, this isn't the bravest move a company has ever made, but baby steps. This means the next step is that much more likely.

It's not about not actually having to depict it. It's about not being allowed to. They went as far as they were able to go without having it shut down.

But I guess it would've been better for them to not try at all, because sneaking something past censors is just "queerbaiting" amiright? For fuck's sake.

They didn't even watch the show. They're just one of those people who likes to bitch about things and make assumptions even though they've never seen the thing they're complaining about

Not to mention they did walk holding hands, as well as holding hands facing each other while staring into each other's eyes. Those are typical romantic gestures in western society. It's not like they didn't show anything at all, and it was all indirect subtext.

Yeah. I think I agree with you. I'm used to thinking about this in terms of stuff like SPN, where they are obviously leading their slash fangirls on with no intention of making Dean/Cas canon, even though I'm sure they could depict a gay relationship, if they wanted. Queerbaiting on Korra doesn't really make sense because it airs on a kids' network.
