I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
You might have used stronger language than I would, but I completely agree with the sentiment. There's nothing wrong with wanting more representation and better portrayal of female characters. But the way it's invaded into EVERY part of fandom just makes the whole thing toxic to me.

I go into fandom to have fun. And while I'll admit that not everyone goes into it the same way I do (nor should they have to), the SJWs seem to come down on everyone who doesn't agree with them. And it sucks.

If you care about representation and social issues in media, that's fine. What's not so fine with me is that people get bullied for not caring and just being in fandom to squee, enjoy themselves, write meta, debate points of the media, etc.

All of this.

THIS.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
This. I've actually stopped caring about social issues because I've gotten so tired of seeing them everywhere and having them shoved into my face when all I want to do is talk about the latest episode of my favorite show or speculate on what's going to happen in the next book of a series I'm reading.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
lol You didn't care about them that much in the first place if a bunch of loud mouths on the internet made you change your mind. nothing wrong with not caring, just don't pretend you gave a fuck in the first place.

Horseshit. Pick your favorite thing in the world. Now spend years associating that thing directly with bullying. Being bullied yourself, seeing other people bullied and being afraid to step in in case they turn on you next. That's now the first thing that comes to mind when you think of your favorite thing. Oh, wait, you don't like it as much now, because that's literally how association works in human brains? Then I guess it was never really your favorite.

Re: I agree with you OP

Huh-huh.

Yep.

Sure.

Alrighty then.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Everyone accepts that association works positively, such as the Pavlovian experiment, but why is it so hard to understand that it works even more powerfully for negative association, purely because our brains have evolved with a powerful negative bias (and the desire to avoid the thing that causes the negative feeling)?

How the hell else do they think behavioral therapy works?

Here's a clue: your amygdala doesn't give a fuck how much you love something. If being around it causes it pain and stressors, then it's going to tell you never to go near it again.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please. It's sad that you were bullied, but you know, you guys that can just say "fuck social justice because it's stresses us" aren't the only ones.

I feel some measure for sympathy for you people, because real SJWs can be pains in the ass, but only so much. Some of us who were also bullied can't shut things down and stop caring about ~social justice~ issues because it's our lives. I can't stop ignoring that I was called the n-word by classmates constantly and then stop caring about shit like that because of stressors due to SJWs wanting to get the upper hand in arguments and troll people.

You know, I really don't care if you people supposedly suddenly stopped caring about shit, but don't pretend you are the only people who had it rough during grade school.

DA

Exactly how many random and unsubstantiated assumptions can you make in a single post?

Apparently this many.

"You people."

I had to look up the word amygdala. And it's early and I'm not awake and I'm not even able to comprehend what side of the issue you're on yet (first cup of coffee.) But I wanted to thank you for making me learn a new word.

That's always awesome.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's strange that you toss in a mention of behavioral therapy, since one of the aims of CBT is to correct the kind of negative associations you're talking about.

We aren't slaves to our biology or to our brains. We're able to recognize when something we're feeling doesn't make sense or is detrimental, and we're able to say "I want to change how I'm feeling about this." We're even able to make ourselves do things that make us uncomfortable when we know it's a good course of action. You guys are looking for excuses to not have to care about what's right and wrong, and that makes you bad people.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So because CBT therapy has never worked for me, I'm an inherently bad person. Well, thanks for letting me know.

Equal rights and social justice aren't a fucking hobby you asswipe. If people being loud on the internet makes you stop caring whether or not someone has the same rights someone else does, that says a lot about you, not about how much you just ~love~ crocheting.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
And yet that doesn't change how human brains work in the real world. Huh.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
People are primed to be racist and sexist in a similar way to how people are primed to hold negative associations. So, should we just throw up our hands and not try to fix racism and sexism, since we can't change how human brains work in the real world?

No, a hobby is a hobby, and when I'm participating in my hobbies, I don't want the shit I have to deal with in real life dragged into something that I do for fun and to escape that shit.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
i kinda agree in the sense that bad sj isn't an excuse to be an ass about social issues, but i also think being constantly reminded how awful the world is can make certain people just shut off from it too.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Nailed it.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
How fucking stupid are you? WOMEN "invade every corner of fandom" because women are everywhere. Ditto gay people. Ditto the disabled. Ditto fucking everyone. There is no safe space. There is no "man, it was so cool when we had our own little boys club where everyone could ignore half the outside world." Because those clubs don't exist--there's always someone from the other side knocking on the door, wanting to be heard, demanding inclusion. Wake up, asshole! The good old days were a lie.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Invade" here doesn't refer to people but rather the incessant need some have to bring social issues into everything and then harass people who are just in fandom to have fun.

I'm a woman of color myself but I don't enter into fandom in order to promote social justice issues because I don't believe it's the place for it. I don't feel comfortable reblogging images of atrocities right next to my OTP. Some people are -- and that's fine for them. But when they start harassing others for not behaving in the same manner, then we have an issue.

When I'm in fandom, I want to read fanfic, look at fan art, chat with other fans about the writing, examine characterization, squee about shipping, discuss rumors, write meta, debate fans on the merits/finer points of the work, etc. I'm not there in order to make some grand statement of how tolerant I am. I'm just there to have fun.

Problem is that many keep using feminism to hate on women and it's depressing.

Re: I agree with you OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ironically, I've found that it's usually the fans who are the loudest about being feminists who do the most bashing of female characters for not meeting their standards of being perfect flawless queens.
