Re: What are you reading FS?

Right now I'm rereading JD Robb's in Death series. I wanted to be fresh on the series before reading the last couple of them since I managed to miss them when they came out. After I finish that, I'm probably going to light a fire under my ass to get caught back up on RA Salvatore's Drizzt books, now that I'm four or five books behind from dragging my feet after Gauntlgrym.

What's Ben Hur about? I've never heard of it.

It's a story of a Jewish man in Roman-occupied Jerusalem. He's betrayed by his former best friend and sent to be a galley slave, and his mother and sister are sent to prison. He goes on to become a respected soldier and charioteer and seeks revenge. It parallels the story of Christ*, who makes an appearance in one scene.

*Who of course has blue eyes and chestnut colored hair.

It's a good story, but the writing style shows it's age. It was written by a Civil War General, and I think a biography of him might be more gripping.

Right now I'm rereading JD Robb's in Death series.

I have such a complicated relationship with those books. On the one hand, I used to get a couple of them out every other trip to the library, because it's honestly like watching a formula cop show: you'll get pretty good cases and interesting cast stories no matter which one you pick up. But I recently went all the way back to the first book, just to remember where it started, and kind of realised that Eve & Roarke's romance really, really, really skeeved me out in the early books. Which is something of a problem since, you know, they're the main pair.

It gets better in the later books, and I love the rest of the cast, and the cases are usually pretty good. I still love the books as comfort reading. I just think that from now on I'm going to stick to around book 6 and upwards, and try to forget how creepy Roarke was at the start.
