When I was in college, I was sitting on the quad hanging out with some friends. This Chinese guy approaches us, suuuuuuper apologetic-like. His face looked like a tomato, he was so embarrassed. In between apologies, he manages to get out that he's a grad student, has been in the US for a few years, but his wife and toddler-age son have been in the country for a whole day, and his son has never seen blonde hair before, and the kid's just fascinated by my hair, and would I mind terribly much if he brought his kid over so he could see it was just hair, OMG I AM SO SORRY FOR THIS EMBARRASSED FORRRREEEEEVVVVVEERRRRR. He was so utterly mortified that I said I understood, and it was OK, and he could bring his son over.

The little kid's eyes lit up like it was Christmas when he got close. I leaned over so he could reach it easier--sort of afraid that he'd tug at it like toddlers do--but he very gently reached out and stroked it and patted it, and I made silly faces at him, and after a couple of minutes he seemed satisfied that the gold stuff was, in fact, attached to my head and that I was, in fact, a person, and the dad apologized again and they left.

That's so cute :) And kudos to you for being understanding towards the kid! Kids don't understand what is appropriate sometimes but as long as the parents are respectful I don't mind accommodating natural kid curiousity.

I'm not blonde, but when I was about eight a couple of kids from Africa who were visiting Europe for the first time came over to my house. The five year old one couldn't stop touching my long, straight hair. At first I was weirded out, then just sat and let her stroke it. She was so amazed at how it felt.

The second time the kids came round, I waited for her to try to touch my hair again but she didn't. I was a bit disappointed. For a while, I'd felt like a precious being from another world.
