Android Users: How do you read downloaded fics?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2015-01-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
So I have my new phone, but I've been struggling to find a good e-reader (specifically/especially a good ePub reader, as that's the format all my fanfics are in, right now). I'm asking here because this seems to be the only place where no one is going to think twice about the fact I have literally hundreds of books, almost all of which have no actual covers.

Most of them either do not allow "sideloading" (importing books from phone and/or SD card), or they do, but then finding a fic is impossible because they use "bookshelf" organization - meaning they only show the covers/first pages, without putting the title ANYWHERE and since the vast majority of my books are AO3 or other fanfic downloads, there are no covers to let me know which book is which. Also, most of them don't seem to have any kind of mechanism for organizing the books other than ordering it by title or author (due to sheer number, I have to organize at least by fandom, if not things like series and stuff, too).

Do you guys have any suggestions for good e-readers? I just need something that lets me import books (from phone and from SD card), lets me organize the books somehow, and gives me a true list view (at least a way to view my books/library with the titles, not just the covers - though a way to view them without covers at all would be fantastic, because I have SO many books and almost all of them are cover-less, so "covers" are a pain in the ass for a variety of reasons).

The closest things I've found are UB Reader and Moon+ reader. Both of their free versions are full of obnoxious ads. UB Reader still gives me covers, even in list view. Moon+ reader looks like it has a mechanism for getting rid of covers completely, but it's a paid app.

I can deal with small ads on the bottom of an app, just not the pop-up ads that come in the free versions of UB Reader and Moon+.

Does anyone know of any free ePub reading apps that can do those three things I mentioned? Or should I just suck it up and buy Moon+? (If any of you use the paid version, do you know if there is a way to get rid of covers entirely in list view, or am I just misinterpreting the functions?)

I can read AO3 fics using my pre-installed Kindle app.

Or I just download the pdf and read it with adobe.

Don't know if that's helpful though.

Seconding the Kindle app.

Thank you, but that wouldn't help. Kindle uses MOBI, and Adobe uses PDF. If I have to download future fanfics in those formats, I will, but that still leaves me with hundreds of downloaded fanfics in ePub format, and quite possibly the same three problems as before (importing, organizing, and viewing).

You could use Calibre on your computer to manage all your ebooks: it's great for changing titles, covers, formats, and so on, so you could then move them from your compute to your phone in whatever format works on your phone, for kindle app or nook app or whatever. Calibre is free and it's easy to use.

If you don't want to mess around with Calibre (which is helpful for desktop-side sorting, but I think you have to buy something to get it to connect), Mantano Reader Lite is great. You can add books from wherever you want and in every format I've tried. You can sort by adding them to various collections/sub-collections or filtering by tag, though I don't think you can do more than one tag at once and you can't do it within a collection. You can then order these results then by title, author, rating, addition date, and last access date. I think there's also a way to add 'series' but I haven't looked into it.

However, I don't see an option for removing covers entirely. There's a 'details' format that has tags, title, author, add date, how far you've read in it, and rating, but also cover; or else there's a thumbnail format that only shows title on top of thumbnail. In neither case does it NOT desplay the title, though.

There's also ads, but only fairly unobtrusive banners on the main page (not the reading page).

FB Reader uses a list view, and it shows covers as a small thumbnail next to the title. Free, no ads.

It doesn't have in-app organization, but you can sort by title, author, tag, recently opened, and a favorites list, and by file tree- so you can easily find them by fandom if you subfolder them. It also allows syncing between devices, if that's relevant.

I only use the Kindle app for books and such, but I downlooad fanfics and such from A03 and FF.net on an app called Codex Reader, it is pretty neat and I enjoy using it. But sadly it doesn't seem to have an import function.

Anyho, thought I should mention it so you know of it for future needs.

Aldiko is useful. It works for me.
