Even so, there's a time and a place for it.

If people want to talk about fandom and you keep bringing up say Ferguson or the shooting in France, you're in the wrong to berate people for not wanting to discuss it. This is FAN-dom. And, personally speaking, I don't engage with real world issues while I squee over fandom. I'm not going to post a pic of my OTP and then follow that up with a photograph of an innocent person being beaten. I just don't do that -- it's not why I'm here.

Or if you want to squee over your OTP and some asshole comes in and accuses you of being a bigot for not shipping them with a POC character. Like…what the hell?

Of course. Social problems aren't appropriate to every conversation, especially when the point of a conversation is squeeing. I was objecting to the people who think fandom should be nothing but constant mindless squeeing that doesn't even try to be serious.

Not me, but I witnessed it.

I'm actually in the fandom that ships the POC character/white character. It's a small pairing and only has a couple hundred fics. Whereas the other white people ships has thousands of fics.

But someone in our fandom basically took a screenshot of a shipper of the popular ship who wrote something about how our smaller POC/white character ship was her "brOTP." She was basically called racist for saying that. And then that user eventually found it…

Needless to say, I was NOT IMPRESSED that someone would do something like that to a rival shipper.

At the same time, going, "Hey, you realize the way you ship X/Y is unhealthy, right?" is fine if it's dropped afterward. Because I know there are too many people out there who don't realize manipulative and abusive relationships because fiction can paint these pairings as, well... Positive. :x

Except if you phrase it as "Hey, you realize the way you ship X/Y is unhealthy, right?" it's very unlikely whoever you're saying that to is going to drop it, because you're attacking how they ship something.

How about "Hey, you realize this aspect of X/Y can come across as abusive/manipulative to some people, right?" instead. Same message, only now you're not a douche.

I'm sorry, but if it deals with controlling and systematically cutting off their contact with others and/or financial independence, that's not COMING ACROSS AS something. That IS something. And people get away with it in real life because of shit like that fucking "it can COME ACROSS as manipulative/abusive!"

But at the same time, it's a fictional ship, not real life. Most people who ship things that are fucked up are well aware that they're fucked up and don't need other people to point it out for them.

I'm presuming BL refers to "Boys' love." At least that's what urban dictionary tells me:

In Japan, BL is the "modern" term for Shounenai, deffinition meaning "Boys love."

In which case, you seem to have serious issues with slash based on similar comments I've seen made (with your style of writing as well).

You might want to take care of that before you start accusing fandom of anything. Just an FYI.

That doesn't change the fact that your original wording is calling the SHIPPER unhealthy, not the SHIP. And there's a fucking huge difference.

If you want to change someone's mind, calling their very being "unhealthy" is not the way to do it.

i'm sure pretty much everyone is aware that their noncon fic or whatever wouldn't fly in reality, so helpfully reminding them how fucked up their OTP is really demeaning
