White-haired dude looks like he's spent too much time in the sun!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's just old. Some of us are pretty tan naturally.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
mostly i just shipped Menolly/happiness, what a great YABS series.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I've always wondered about those two.

I've always thought he was sexy.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she did basically end up with the Diet Coke version of him, didn't she?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
If I had only ready Dragonsong and Dragonsinger, I might've been with you. BUT, I came to dislike Robinton. Even before the Masterharper book, he became a "Mary Sue" to me, and I found him insufferable.

As for Menolly, I liked her in her first two books but not in any of the others. She seemed to have been infected with the stuff I didn't like in Robinton. She clearly always knew more than everyone else, always with that twinkle in her eye. And she poked at other people but didn't explain anything. It was that smug superiority that bugged me. I liked when she was insecure but still reaching for her goals and trying to fit in.

'smug superiority' is the reason i end up disliking a *lot* of characters. I hate that so very much.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
yes! I liked her in dragon song and dragon singer... I kinda despised the way she treated Piemur in Dragondrums though.

PERN SECRET!!!!

Their mutual attracted was (very) briefly addressed in canon, so why not?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
You're meant to do exactly that. That's why Robinton sent Menolly off on a tiny ship with his apprentice when he realized that her queen fire lizard was getting ready to have her mating flight. Otherwise, they would probably have gotten caught up in it and wound up together...and even though I'm sure Robinton was more than a little in love with her too, he thought it wasn't a good idea.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, that was Sebell's queen, flown by Menolly's bronzes.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I shipped these two so hard back in the day.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I shipped them when I was younger, but when I got older I realized it was only when she was young and insecure and needed his affection and support so badly (in addition to their mutual respect and love of music) that I was really attracted to them as a pairing. When a year or two later his heart started ailing, I think it would have been wrong for such a young girl whose life was just beginning to be tied as caregiver for 10 years (or however long) to someone who was reaching that stage in his life.

My older self just kind of went, meh.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
There with you, anon. I didn't read all the books, so I didn't get turned off like some other people replying to this secret. But I sure liked them, and I've always been a fan of pairs with age differences.

Transcript

Image: two separate pictures (cover images?) of characters. One is a white or Latino male with white hair, holding a an etched wine glass toward the viewer with a small gold dragon( ?) on his shoulder. The other is a white person (not sure of gender) with medium-length brown hair, wearing a pirate shirt, playing a pan flute outside, while surrounded by small dragons.

Text: Shipping these two when I was a teenager gave me a student/teacher kink.

The "small dragons" are firelizards. "Cousins" (forebears, genetically modified by the colonists) to the Dragons of Pern.
