Secret #14 reminded me of the F'nor raped Brekke thing and the other questionable stuff in the Pern books. I used to love those books and I wish I could go back to not seeing all the problems because it's tainted some of my favorite characters.

What things do you wish you could unlearn?

When I was a child, I loved Teen Wolf more than anything. (The movie, not the TV show. Well, I also loved the animated series that existed briefly in the 80s, but that's not the same thing.) A while back, I read something that pointed out that given how his lycanthropy is coded in the film and how it functions, the movie is basically about Michael J. Fox being able to turn into a black guy.

It's true. The surprisingly specific racial coding is unmistakable once you see it. So while it's still not as cringe-inducing as, say, the jazz club in Weird Science, my childhood favorite film is now tainted with creepiness.

I don't remember the movie that well so I might be wrong here, but isn't it possible that's as much a question of how our culture codes black traits as the movie coding MJF as being black?

I hadn't heard this before, but I don't see this as a problem, inasmuch it seems like a "white" kid discovering he is part "black." Which is normal.

Anyway, interpreting it like being a big hairy jock is exclusively "black" sounds really racist in that sort of racial-essentialist way that some "social justice" types and ostensible progressives like.

Do you have a link? Because I'd love to take apart that critic's argument.

The manga ending of Karin. Granted, it's foreshadowed throughout the story, but it's also a giant fuck-you to the development Karin's parents got and a depressing answer to the story's central question. The translation I read cut out right before the ending, and I wish I'd left it at that.

Well, the adult realization that "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" is basically a Nazi recruitment song kinda... spoils things.

Uh... not really? It's a "stupid teenagers in love" song. He just happens to be a Nazi.

Also regarding Pern, I kind of wish I could unlearn the Tentpeg Statement (although if you're not the opposite of me and wish to learn what that is: http://fanlore.org/wiki/The_Tent_Peg_Statement). It made it hard to take her books seriously anymore.

Yeah, I already knew all about that. It made me reconsider the dynamics of the Weyrs, which is what I meant by "other issues" in the book.

Just reading that again made the cringeworthy hilarity fresh. May I never have an interview where I ever say something so dumb.

The ending to the Bunny Drop manga. I liked the anime and thought it was sweet. I heard there was something bad about the manga ending, decided to check it out anyway. I wish I'd left it at the anime.

Seriously, the deeper I dig, the more the horror mounts up. And every time I think, "Nope, they can't get any lower than this. I can't be shocked anymore. They've hit the bottom of the barrel," it's like they scream THE HELL YOU SAY, bust out the shovel, break out the bottom, and dig for China like the apocalypse is on their heels.

Only NOT learning of it would be even worse.
