I've been visiting this forum for ex mormons lately because I can't stop being fascinated with how completely crackers that religion is. The practicing Mormons won't tell you any of the really ridiculous stuff because it's supposed to be a big religious secret but the ex Mormons, many of whom are extremely disgruntled with their former faith for a variety of somewhat compelling reasons, have no problem posting all kinds of things about it online. Stuff like church doctrines and historical documents and essays that were written by Mormons for Mormons and lessons that they were taught in their youth groups and all kinds of insider stuff that the practicing Mormons would NEVER share with an outsider.

Oh, that reminds me, I know a lot of people who are really into Fundamentalist Christians and the Quiverfull movement. I know some of them are people who were raised in those religions as kids, and like to talk about the stuff they went through, but some of them are just watching from the outside. I guess it's pretty easy with shows like "Howevermany Kids and Counting" and whatnot.

And they do seem to know the names of a lot of the major families, and their kids, and who's "courting" and who's getting marries, and who's pregnant, and sometimes they speculate on which kids are likely to rebel. I think this is where the forum "Free Jinger" about the Duggar famiy comes from.

Oh, God, fundies and the Quiverfull movement. I kind of can't stop reading about that once I get started, it's sort of like being unable to look away from a car crash.

Some of the stories of people who got away from those movements and had their whole family cut them off is heartbreaking.

Sorry to break it to you, but as someone who's had several chill, liberal Mormon friends in my lifetime, I can guarantee you that most of what people claim on that site is bullshit.

My guess is that these are survivors of near-cults, if not outright cults, because like you I've had sane Mormon friends, and while sure, they may be keeping secrets... I highly doubt it.

Ultimately I think all Churches probably differ depending on where you go. A friend of mine is Methodist and very socially liberal, but I'm pretty sure I've heard of conservative (socially) Methodists.

They're talking about FLDS Mormons, no doubt, who are absolutely a cult.

Echoing what the other anons said. I think there's a sliding scale of different sects/extremism because I've known plenty of Mormons in my lifetime and they've been pretty much just like everyone else. (Generally earlier marrying age and two year mission before college come to mind.)

It's probably similar to super fundie Catholics and the super chill ones.
