Non-entertainment fandoms

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm sort of a fan of an... issue (should I call it that?) and the people involved. It's got groups of people who hate each other. It's got interesting costumes and violence and beautiful scenery.

It's not a serious issue, in the sense of life-or-death serious, or a major political issue (well, some people might consider it major, but it's not like a war or something). The people involved feel strongly about it, but I don't really have a "side." It doesn't even take place in my country. I just watch their YouTube videos and look at their Facebook pages where they post pictures pretty landscapes and cute animals and people on the other side so that they can make insulting comments on those peoples' looks and morals. I've gotten to recognize a few of the people involved and know their names. I don't stalk them, I just look at the content they post publicly on social media sites and read articles about them in regular newspapers.

I probably sound creepy, but it's all out there in public, and it wouldn't be if they had a problem with people seeing it (though one side tends to post pictures of the other side without their permission, and the other side might not like it. Nothing I can do about that, though.)

Is anyone else a "fan" of something that isn't actual entertainment?

Used bookstores hell to the yes. I used to work in an antiquarian bookstore with a Victorian tin ceiling and a leather armchair near a bay window for reading. Bliss.

Re: Non-entertainment fandoms

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I mean

I think this is quite a normal experience. It's called being interesting in and following something. There's no particular reason to construe it in terms of fandom, that's all. Fandom is not the only lens through which to understand interests. I follow politics quite closely but it's not a fandom as such. And there are tons of things like that.

Re: Non-entertainment fandoms

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I don't really follow it the way I would a political issue. It's more for entertainment than because it's something important to me. It's another place's very local problem that isn't important on a large scale, and it doesn't affect me at all.

I don't have any strong opinions on which side is right and which side is wrong. I don't even mean "I just can't decide," I don't even care.

I just watch them for the amusement of seeing people who I can sometimes recognize (but don't personally know) fighting their miniature war against an attractive but foreign backdrop, and to laugh at the often-funny vitriol they spew at each other on Facebook, and sometimes in person, as you can see on their YouTube videos.

You think politics aren't a fandom? Obama/Romney trumps Obama/McCain.

I imagine most people are! I'm a fan of a lot of things... Uh, I guess makeup/nail polish count?

Not sure I'd call it a fandom though, but there are blogs and I do check them now and then.

Conspiracy theories and the paranormal.

I'm not really a "believer" in that kind of stuff, I just find it really interesting to read about. I can waste hours scrolling through threads and youtube videos of people talking about this stuff. It's fascinating how people think.

I've been visiting this forum for ex mormons lately because I can't stop being fascinated with how completely crackers that religion is. The practicing Mormons won't tell you any of the really ridiculous stuff because it's supposed to be a big religious secret but the ex Mormons, many of whom are extremely disgruntled with their former faith for a variety of somewhat compelling reasons, have no problem posting all kinds of things about it online. Stuff like church doctrines and historical documents and essays that were written by Mormons for Mormons and lessons that they were taught in their youth groups and all kinds of insider stuff that the practicing Mormons would NEVER share with an outsider.

Re: Non-entertainment fandoms

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that reminds me, I know a lot of people who are really into Fundamentalist Christians and the Quiverfull movement. I know some of them are people who were raised in those religions as kids, and like to talk about the stuff they went through, but some of them are just watching from the outside. I guess it's pretty easy with shows like "Howevermany Kids and Counting" and whatnot.

And they do seem to know the names of a lot of the major families, and their kids, and who's "courting" and who's getting marries, and who's pregnant, and sometimes they speculate on which kids are likely to rebel. I think this is where the forum "Free Jinger" about the Duggar famiy comes from.

Echoing what the other anons said. I think there's a sliding scale of different sects/extremism because I've known plenty of Mormons in my lifetime and they've been pretty much just like everyone else. (Generally earlier marrying age and two year mission before college come to mind.)

It's probably similar to super fundie Catholics and the super chill ones.

Pugs, believe it or not. I think 3/4ths of my Instagram and Tumblr feeds are filled with nothing but pug-related accounts/blogs. It's a pretty vibrant, tight-knit community (which became very clear to me after two beloved rescue dogs passed away within a week of each other), and it's something that brings me much-needed smiles and laughter and, for the most part, it's largely drama-free.

Sad aside: I know the majority of the pugs I follow by name, and often refer to them in conversation with my sister, haha.

Genealogy. It actually even has its share of wank.

I love it, except it's hard to make friends through it, because a, people live far away (it's still online, after all), and b, I'm one of five people under forty who bothers most of the time...

My aunt's really big on that. She was going around and scraping the mold off of tombstones so she could read them properly. In one little Italian village where hardly anyone moved in or out, she could trace our ancestry back to the 14th century.

Like gardens are serious business. How you look after x species pet (bunny fandom is FILLED with crazies, god forbid u don't feed them oxbow* and I got death threats and someone wishing id get cancer because I didn't think an r rated film should be banned because it illustrated a bunny death (bunny was irl unharmed). That's always hilarious.

Sustainable living fandom is fighting galore. Rescue 'fandom' <- I actually just flounced out of a corner of that. Um Tea fandom? Tea arguments. All fun to both watch and participate in.

Say away from child free dear lord those communities are horrible. I'm gonna go be child free in my not-hating-children corner.

Cults and DID. There's more overlap than you'd think, and it gets REALLY fascinating/creepy REALLY fast. I see a lot of the same names/trolls over and over again.

Plus it actually has a lot of real-life applications for me, so it's actually USEFUL and not just fascinating.

Mt. Everest climbing season and all its associated lore, since the first Something Awful thread on it a few years ago. It's an amazing spectacle of qualified climbers who can still die horribly when things go wrong, and completely unqualified people who shouldn't be anywhere near a mountain but insist on going there in droves to fulfill some dumb bucket list ambition. It's actually crowded now. If you get into trouble in the death zone (they willingly pay tens of thousands of dollars to go to a place with a DEATH ZONE!) where the air is thinnest and you can't keep walking, they can't do anything for you and will leave you to die. It's very difficult and rare to even recover a body, so most of them are still there and some have become landmarks. There's an area they call Rainbow Valley, for all the different colored snowsuits on the corpses. Shriya Shah-Klorfine from the 2012 season had never climbed a mountain in her life and prepared for the world's tallest by backpacking around Toronto and climbing the rock wall at the gym. Spoiler: she died. It's craaaazy.

I'm into knives, dagger, swords, spears and other bladed weapons. But I mostly just look at cool weaponsmith/fighting style/historical background videos and reblog/post gorgeous pictures - I have no desire to mingle with the fandom. The "Katanas over everything" fanbrats are not even the most annoying thing about it, and that's saying a lot.
