It doesn't need an internet connection to play. I downloaded mine from Steam, so I can't help with the disc question, but in my opinion the idea of the combat is true. Their system of pausing to coordinate strategy means you can stop the whole thing at any point to regroup or decide on the next actions.

It's also why I gave up on the game. I can't stand that particular combat system, it's a chore.

Yeah, I can definitely see why people would hate it. After some adjusting it ended up working for me, but it's such a distinct style.

It's just rehashed from old Infinity Engine games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment and similar games from that era. I find it unwieldy at best (DAO), downright unusable at worst (Planescape) which is why I roll my eyes at old-school cRPG fans who think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. IMO it's one of the biggest failings of the so-called "golden age" of cRPGs. YMMV of course, and I'm sure everyone's sick of me whining about that particular era anyway.

Haha, the things I haven't been aware of by not having grown up with games.

Consider yourself lucky, you got the least awful iteration of that particular combat system!
