Dragon Age: Origins

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Stupid questions time: I've decided to go and get this game, but I'm so behind the times I don't even know how. Is it better to get it as like a CD in a box or to download it? My internet connection is unreliable so to have it off a CD would be my preference, can you buy it used? And does it require an internet connection to play? I've been told it's playable even for someone who's not great at combat, y'all better not have led me astray, lol.

My computer isn't the best but it handled the Sims and World of Warcraft so I think it would survive this....

System requirements: http://www.dragonage.com/en_US/news/pc-systems-requirements-revealed

I don't think I can run it, since my computer is dual-core and it wants quad-core. Not that I know what a core is . . . (I have a vague idea that it has to do with multitasking--dual-core can do two things at once, quad-core can do four, and so on.)

Well, those are the requirements for Inquisition, so the question is whether OP meant Origins as stated or actually meant Inquisition. Origins will have lower requirements.

:) Nah, it made me question whether OP did mean Inquisition! Since that's the one more likely to be talked about.

Check this website to be sure you can run it http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/Requirements/dragon-age-origins/10917?p=r but I'm almost positive there's an Ultimate edition with all the DLC? (A friend bought it.) I think you may have to download the DLC, but I'm not certain; that could've been on disc too. (The rest was, so even if you had to download the DLC it would be better than downloading the entire game?)

Well, that's a puzzler; site says my video card doesn't meet the requirements, but all the ATTRIBUTES of my video card do meet requirements? The site also says I can't play WoW but I know for a fact I can, so now I'm more confused than ever, lol!

Hmm.... So it says WoW won't run on your computer either? If the specs for Dragon Age are lighter than the specs for WoW then you probably have nothing to worry about. However, I'm no expert so maybe someone else will have a better idea of what's going on. (Btw, don't know if you would feel comfortable doing it but the people over at the Dragon age reddit are mostly fantastic, so if you feel like asking them I bet they'd love to help you.)

That site is a crapshoot when it comes to judging what systems can handle what games, in my experience. Most likely you can run Origins, you just can't run it optimally (outside of low settings), which the site confuses with being unable to run it at all.

It doesn't need an internet connection to play. I downloaded mine from Steam, so I can't help with the disc question, but in my opinion the idea of the combat is true. Their system of pausing to coordinate strategy means you can stop the whole thing at any point to regroup or decide on the next actions.

It's also why I gave up on the game. I can't stand that particular combat system, it's a chore.

Yeah, I can definitely see why people would hate it. After some adjusting it ended up working for me, but it's such a distinct style.

It's just rehashed from old Infinity Engine games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment and similar games from that era. I find it unwieldy at best (DAO), downright unusable at worst (Planescape) which is why I roll my eyes at old-school cRPG fans who think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. IMO it's one of the biggest failings of the so-called "golden age" of cRPGs. YMMV of course, and I'm sure everyone's sick of me whining about that particular era anyway.

Haha, the things I haven't been aware of by not having grown up with games.

Consider yourself lucky, you got the least awful iteration of that particular combat system!

I'm sure you could get a CD copy of Amazon or the like. Get the Ultimate edition that includes all the DLC. It doesn't cost a whole lot more and it's well worth it if you find yourself liking the game.

Awakening is imo better than the main game in a lot of ways (including smoother combat with faster animations), Stone Prisoner, Return to Ostagar, and the Soldier's Peak DLC add great content to the main game, and Witch Hunt and Amgarrak do a nice job wrapping up the Warden's story and prepping you for DA2.

It doesn't require an internet connection to play, but I think it does require net briefly to do things like validate your copy (and MAYBE dl DLC.)

It doesn't require a continuous internet connection to play, but I believe you need a connection to verify your copy when you first run it. After that, you can play offline, I do it all the time. I wouldn't say download or disk is better, except for download having very good and frequent sales. But if you prefer a disk copy, Amazon has it for $9 (the base game, to get it with all DLC is $19, even used). And yes, I'd say it's very playable for those not good at combat, even for those who've never touched an RPG, with great difficulty scaling. I came into it brand new and clueless on the easiest mode and now I play on the hardest mode. It's also very forgiving to older PCs, I first started playing it on a really dippy integrated card with no problems.

I think it's generally easier just to download it through Origin or something. If your Internet can handle that, I don't know, it is a big game but then again it is, in technology years, kinda older so it might not be as rough to download.

I'd say the battling in Dragon Age Origins is kind of tough for a newbie but I believe you can set the difficulty to easy. Well, I shouldn't say it's tough, but it might take a little getting used to, but then again the game does start you out easier before you get into the tougher battles. And it is more or less straightforward. You can pause every two seconds if you want to think about what to do, or you can get through a number of battles just by using normal attacks. I recommend going Mage, I think that's the easiest for a new player because you can usually stay in the back while the action is happening, your attacks are ranged and you have access to healing spells.

I think the biggest thing to keep in mind about the battles is that while areas aren't explicitly level gated, there are sections of the game that are definitely meant to be explored at higher levels and the enemies are scaled appropriately. If you run into an early, non-boss encounter in an area that you can't defeat without multiple reloads (or running the fuck away, going back and killing one guy, and repeating until everything's dead), you've probably wandered into one of those areas and will save yourself a lot of frustration if you go away, do some other quests, and come back later.
