It doesn't require a continuous internet connection to play, but I believe you need a connection to verify your copy when you first run it. After that, you can play offline, I do it all the time. I wouldn't say download or disk is better, except for download having very good and frequent sales. But if you prefer a disk copy, Amazon has it for $9 (the base game, to get it with all DLC is $19, even used). And yes, I'd say it's very playable for those not good at combat, even for those who've never touched an RPG, with great difficulty scaling. I came into it brand new and clueless on the easiest mode and now I play on the hardest mode. It's also very forgiving to older PCs, I first started playing it on a really dippy integrated card with no problems.
