I've been playing through the Halo series in a serious attempt for the first time after having dismissed it for 12 years in my tedious "I'm 20 and smarter than you" phase that I'm pretty sure everyone goes through. I really like it! At least, I like the first one, which I played on PC. The second one is proving more difficult for me to get through, partly because I have to play it on console (and I'm terrible at sticking with console games) and partly because when I got to the end of the 2nd chapter (two hours' worth!) the game crashed and I lost all my checkpoints, dumping me back at the beginning, and I haven't been too keen to try again.

If you feel up to it I think the second one is worth the shot (Mostly for the storyline... Yes I actually enjoy the characters and story in these games) but imo Halo 2 is by far the worst in the series. On a whole I really enjoy the vehicle sections in these games (<3 warthogs), but near the end of 2... Jesus Christ.

3 is excellent though, and while a bit different I'm fond of 4 as well. Reach is one of my favorite campaigns (Ugh Reach, unbreak my heartttt), but I rather liked ODST too. They're all more fun then you might be lead to believe.

I've been meaning to give the Halo series a try myself. I've dismissed it as being a 'mindless dudebro-y game' (which has now been supplanted by COD, hah), but one of my friends is really into it and I didn't realize how deep -and interesting- the lore is. When I eventually get a Xbox One, I'll give the Master Chief Collection a shot.

That might be the strangest dichotomy of Halo's existence -- that it's at once a dudebro magnet and also a surprisingly deep sci-fi yarn, AT THE SAME TIME. It's all about whether you play multiplayer or singleplayer, I guess -- and the same's true for CoD.

Having played Marathon recently, Halo's depth isn't that much of a surprise to me, though most of it, amusingly enough, isn't in the game proper so much as it's in the expanded universe material.
