New to you

What have you just watched/read/played recently and what did you think of it? Can be new to you or new in general.

The Best Years Of Our Lives, winner of Best Picture in 1946. I don't know why this isn't referred to in most people's lists of the best films of the era, because it completely blew me away. Watch it.

I need to see this. I have kind of a thing for Myrna Loy.

The Mission Impossible movies. I knew of them obviously but I only watched them recently. Man they were awesome.

Cherry High School Comedy Club. It's cheap. Cheap. CHEAP! (Seriously, the sprite mirroring's so bad the main character's shirt reads backwards half the time, and characters have to go offscreen to collapse in exhaustion because no one animated them lying down.) The characters are all cute and charming, though, and it's fun to solve their personal problems. The main character in particular is a lot more complex than she first seems. I'd give it a tentative recommendation if you need something to relax and unwind.

I just watched the Immortals with Luke Evans. I liked it but then it's got mythology, hot actors, and pretty visuals, and that's all I need. I thought the priestesses were gorgeous. The main one really blew me away. I'm not usually that interested in actresses and they all look similar to me but wow was she gorgeous. I loved her relationship with her sister priestesses.

I liked seeing the version of the gods appearing young but not being "young gods". Though, it was difficult to tell the male gods apart. Their head gear was silly also.

I liked that the gods all wanted to help humans, respected human free will, and there weren't petty jealousies and such that are often in these kinds of movies (you know, where Hades is trying to undermine Zeus, or Ares is jealous Zeus loves Perseus more, etc.).

I also liked that Theseus seems to be a totally mortal man. He's never said to be the son of any of the gods, so his feats are all his own.

I also thought the villain was creepy and terrifying. The visuals were amazing. The punishments were disturbing. The only thing that I didn't really care for was that all the action at the end was kind of same-y. I had fight fatigue by the end. Also, it was weird there were only 6 gods. Would've liked to see more.

Overall, though, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I finally watched The Winter Soldier and I have fallen hard for it and this fandom. ;;;

I just finished a second run through of the Last of Us. It is absolutely one of my favorite games. Haven't dabbled much in the fandom, but would like to.

I love The Last of Us. The voice acting is stellar and the music is hauntingly beautiful. The gameplay took me a bit of getting used to, but I ended up enjoying it a lot.

By the end of the game I was sooo invested in Joel and Ellie...

oh man same. I'm admittedly more attached to Joel than Ellie, but I love their relationship so much. I spent a day and a half thinking about what that ending meant haha.

I spent a lot of time thinking about the ending too, but I like that it was ambiguous; thought it fit really well with everything that had come before. Joel and Ellie's relationship was definitely the heart of the game and I could probably play it a dozen times because of how well written it was. It really pulls the heartstrings.

... Also, Joel is hot.

I've just recently gotten into Killer Instinct. While I've been peripherally aware of it from my days in the Nintendo/Rareware fandom -because you couldn't go 3 feet without someone asking about KI3 at the time-, it never grabbed my attention until just recently. The Did You Know Gaming episodes for it were really fascinating, so I decided to look deeper into it.

Sadly, I don't have an Xbox One yet, so I'm left to make longing grabby-hands at the newest entry, and I've only barely played a ROM of the SNES version (I can't get MAME to work and I'm hesitant to drop $28+tax on KI Gold at my local game store) but man... I'm already in love with how OTT some of these characters are and the absurd lore behind it all. But you know... fighting games.

Killer Instinct is great. I remember playing it on my N64 for days on end.

I've been playing through the Halo series in a serious attempt for the first time after having dismissed it for 12 years in my tedious "I'm 20 and smarter than you" phase that I'm pretty sure everyone goes through. I really like it! At least, I like the first one, which I played on PC. The second one is proving more difficult for me to get through, partly because I have to play it on console (and I'm terrible at sticking with console games) and partly because when I got to the end of the 2nd chapter (two hours' worth!) the game crashed and I lost all my checkpoints, dumping me back at the beginning, and I haven't been too keen to try again.

If you feel up to it I think the second one is worth the shot (Mostly for the storyline... Yes I actually enjoy the characters and story in these games) but imo Halo 2 is by far the worst in the series. On a whole I really enjoy the vehicle sections in these games (<3 warthogs), but near the end of 2... Jesus Christ.

3 is excellent though, and while a bit different I'm fond of 4 as well. Reach is one of my favorite campaigns (Ugh Reach, unbreak my heartttt), but I rather liked ODST too. They're all more fun then you might be lead to believe.

I've been meaning to give the Halo series a try myself. I've dismissed it as being a 'mindless dudebro-y game' (which has now been supplanted by COD, hah), but one of my friends is really into it and I didn't realize how deep -and interesting- the lore is. When I eventually get a Xbox One, I'll give the Master Chief Collection a shot.

That might be the strangest dichotomy of Halo's existence -- that it's at once a dudebro magnet and also a surprisingly deep sci-fi yarn, AT THE SAME TIME. It's all about whether you play multiplayer or singleplayer, I guess -- and the same's true for CoD.

Having played Marathon recently, Halo's depth isn't that much of a surprise to me, though most of it, amusingly enough, isn't in the game proper so much as it's in the expanded universe material.

Just started watching Peaky Blinders last week, and it's a great show! But I kind of think the real reason I really like it is because I LOVE Cillian Murphy and his swagger in this show.
