There are probably a lot of mostly unseen (and unheard) fans of any fandom. They do contribute by commenting on fics and art and contributing to other conversations (like on Fandom Secrets), but they don't make a lot of noise/wank, so you mostly don't really think of them when you think of your fandom. I bet they're there, though.
