So true, and I'd take personally hilariously or irritatingly godawful fic a hundred times over those blandly safe yawnfests you describe. Now, individually, they're not all that bad or anything. A bit of fluff that's written on a squeeful whim without much character depth or meticulousness is hardly something to get pissed off at after just one dose. But when they're all put together, they start to coalesce into a massive blob of blandness that's way more irritating than the sum of its parts.
