But is it really canon if they have a will-they-won't-they or they never really wind up together in canon? I mean, Avengers fandom is basically that, right?

Not really? Unless you're referring to strictly the comics, which I'll admit, I'm not up on. But in the movies, things like Tony/Pepper and Thor/Jane, to use two examples, are pretty canon.

Yeah, for some ships, it was will-they-or-won't they at first (Pepper/Tony) but by Iron Man 3, and even implied in The Avengers, it was totally canon. Thor/Jane was implied in Thor, to the point of actual making-out, but verified in Thor 2, and Steve/Peggy is canon as well, though they're not still together in Cap 2, for obvious reasons, so he's my wildcard, and I can ship him with everyone/anyone. |D
