I do this too. I don't know if it's a subconscious RPF thing or not (RPF doesn't squick me so much as... causes second-hand embarrassment?), but I definitely have a harder time imagining real-live characters in shippy scenarios outside canon. I think something about their being portrayed by real-live human beings makes them more concretely embedded in my mind than 2D/literary characters.

I have less of a hard time with 2D/literary characters that subsequently become 3D, but even then I tend to stick to canon ships.
