Ahhh, that sounds like it's more of a writing issue that they might not be able to change(Well, there's the possibility that they could but if they write for fun they probably wont care. And I doubt anyone actually critiques their work since it sounds like they mostly write kinks).

I get being baffled by an author's popularity, I am by some in my fandoms but I also realise that my tastes aren't going to be everyone else's, so while I might see a particular fic as bad and OOC there will be plenty of other people who will eat it right up.(And I have no doubt that some of the tropes/kinks I like reading other people will think are awful and bad too).

It's okay to be mystified by it though OP, I think we've all been there at least once.
