What sort of readership does you fandom have, OP?

I'd be worried that I'm generalizing if I hadn't seen the same pattern over and over in many different fandoms, but a lot of younger readers are pretty much only here for the edgy excitement of kinks/porn and the schmoop of fluff. And the things they think are quality now are going to be the things they'll be embarrassed they enjoyed in a few years when they've read more widely.

I remember the fics I used to read 10+ years ago that I thought were amazing, only to reread them a few years later (after reading a wider depth and breadth of fiction, fan and otherwise) and cringe at how gushy I'd been over them. It's just a natural progress.

I also found myself just yesterday reading a fic that was supposedly the most edgy and horrific thing a certain fandom churned out. The main demographic for this fandom is maybe the 16-20 bracket, and it was pretty bizarre how that group reacted to this fic while I (30+) was reading thinking "I've seen so much worse than this, why is this supposed to be the nightmare fuel they say?"

I also find that as my readership tends to be older and more familiar with more complex literary techniques, they leave more thoughtful and constructive feedback on my work, and that's worth a hundred pages of a BNF's "more!" reviews to me.

tl;dr - what your fandom is, and the people involved in it, will play a big factor in the sort of response different types of fic get.
